I have been reading a wonderful reference to Canon Flash with great explanations for everything you wanted to know about Canon Flash and ETTL. It is located at: http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/
I suggest you read all three parts.
My thanks to the person who previously posted this link. The frequent occurrence of questions related to Canon Flash merits reposting this link.

I second that recommendation! I stumbled upon this site last year and found it extremely informative.

Agreed. That explanation was so much more complete than anything in the Canon camera or flash manuals. It had a lot of historical stuff about old Canon equipment, but that is easy to skip over. When I saw it a year ago, I simply printed it all out. I keep that in my bag of photo literature to read in my copious free time.

No, put it in your photo gear bag! That way when you need that info, you can actually find it and not grouse about "darn I have that info at home!"

When I load up my car to go do a week's worth of nature photography, I load it with at least ten pounds of photo literature, magazines, manuals, and guides.

I never know when I am going to be stuck out someplace waiting an extra hour before dawn light.

The Canon EOS flash text is there and a couple of books by John Shaw and Galen Rowell.

Thanks for the link. Very informative. I've always wondered why certain individuals were always caught in my photos with their eyes closed whenver I used a flash. I initially thought that they must have very quick reflexes to be able to react to the pre-flash so quickly. Now I know it's because I have my camera set to 2nd curtain. I'm going to set it back to 1st curtain and see it it eliminates the BEETTL syndromes in my flash photos.
