View Full Version : My purples come out blue

I've seen this problem discussed a few times on the forum but I've never seen a good solution. I shoot thousands of sports photos for a college that uses purple and white as their school colors. Sometimes the photos pick up the purple with no problem and sometimes the purple is converted to a nice blue color with no hint of purple.

I have had this happen with a Canon 20D, a Panasonic digital and a Kodak digital so I know it isn't a problem with a specific camera. All of the other color seem fine so it doesn't seem to be a problem with my white balance. Someone will point out that I can fix this in PS which is great but I would rather get the color correct from the start and save a lot of work.

I have not found any common factors in the "blue" photos such as time of day, indoors or outdoors, shooting into the sun or with the sun, etc. I feel like there has to be a solution and I'd love to hear some suggestions (I'll be going out shortly to a Saints practice and won't be back to a computer until some time tomorrow).

Thanks, Frank.

I have had the same problem with a local high school whos colors are purple and white. The problem only seems to be limited to my laptop monitor however. When I have ordered prints the color is fine.
Have you tried printing anything to see if it is the monitor or in the actual file?

Try working in AdobeRGB1998 in CS if you are not. This should fix any printing issues. (as long as your monitor is correctly calibrated) The 'Gamut Warning' feature is your friend! :)

Sometimes part of the problem is that dyes/inks/RGB can't all reproduce the same color spectrum. As long as you can get it right in the print, I wouldn't worry about it. And if you can only get close, most won't notice it anyway? (Yeah, yeah, I know...) ;)

Thanks for the replies. Let me check on the calibration of the monitor and the printing. There might be an extremely fine line between blue and purple that is throwing me off. I can tell you that when I go through a whole set of sports photos from the school I get purple on the monitor most of the time and then I'll hit a streak of blues so I know the monitor does display purple without any difficulty.

I'll check more and post examples if I need more help. Thanks again,

Frank.
