My family rented a house on cape cod for the week and it had this really nice coy pond in the front yard. I spent lots of time around it, taking pictures of the frogs. here are some, i've never photographed any real "animals in nature" shots, so i'd love some crit if possible. thanks:D

Your pictures are very well done! I like the long foreground in #1 I love #2 and #3, great exposure and cropping. #4 is OK, the grass is alittle distracting, but it's growing on me. #5 is the most interesting... I thought it was a little under exposed. #2 is my favorite! Over all they are very good.

amazing, forgive the cliche but:
"they look like they're right out of a magazine"
great work.number 2 is probably my favorite.

I agree, on number two the angle of the picture is very nice.

I think they were magazine quality too! Very well done. Reminds me of Annie Dillard's book Pilgram at Tinker Creek.

They look good to me _ nice crisp colors and sharp.

The second and third shots are eye catching. There is a bit of distraction with the grass, but the frog probably won't sit still while you trim it back to get the "perfect" shot. Well done.

If these are your first "real animals in nature" shots - I can't wait to see your results when you've got the hang of it! Excellent shots - what gear did you use?

I like the first but find there is too much space below the frog. I like the second except for the OOF ( and blown) distractions in the foreground. I like the 3rd except for the OOF and blown leaf in the BG and the wasted space above the frog. The first four shots cause the frog to be very tight to the frame......why portrait mode? Still nice images but unless you are purposely pushing the envelope on composition I think the camera would have been better off left on a horizontal plane with allowance in the frame for the frog to look/move into.. Just my opinion.

Those are pretty well done. I like the second and fourth. I've never been able to shoot frogs in the wild. The ones around here are a bit camera shy.

scrumpy- i shoot digital with a d60, and i believe these were taken with the 70-200 4 or 85 1.8.
gary- thank you for all the crit. I wanted all of these photos to work well together, thus the similar style to each shot. the OOF you mention is simply blurred because i shot the lens wide open to smooth the surroundings and really bring your eye to the frog. however, i would like to experiment more with horizontal comp, i just really think the long lines of the grass related more to vertical comps, and i liked the wide open feeling all the extra space gave off. Because this was a man made coy pond, i really couldn't find any varying terrain to maybe work better horizontally, but i do think the series would be better off with more horizontal comp. thank you!
thank you for the compliments and great crit everyone, i'm looking forward to printing these once i save up for my r2400 :D ;)

Love 2 & 3.
Very well shot, as someone said - right out of the pages of a magazine.
WELL DONE!!

I like them all if for nothing else than the variations of your shots. Well done.

I agree with everyone; those are great shots. I do think that some of them have some bright areas that are a little distracting, but overall very good!
And yes, 2 is the best!

# 3 and two balance each other out for me nicely....However # 3 stands alone as well....I wonder about the horizontal leaf blade of yellow grass that might not be the trim at point for a stand alone PIC.
Therefore:
#3 wins out by far cause of the beautifuly perfect eye reflection.
I'll look again tomorrow...usually, I start to favor other pics a little bit more on the rebound.......

You need to be more patient but you know that now:). These are among the best frog shots I've seen, number 3 is excellent.

Great shots all - re: #2, it's been said, but one thing I learned from posting here is that if you have the animal looking into the largest part of the photo it gives you a much better shot.

What focal length were they taken at? I like #3 best, but they are all nice and in focus. Some of the brush is a bit distracting but I would imagine its difficult to get them without all the grass.

sorry, haven't been on in a few days. thank you for all the kind words, esp. the magazine comments as one day i'd love to shoot for a magazine.
these were taken with either my 85 1.8 or 70-200 f.4 at varying lengths.
and rick, this wasn't a studio, just a coy pond!
thanks everyone
