View Full Version : Which Lens?

Got my D-30 and I currently use a 28-70/2.8 and a 85/1.8, but my question is I've covered my portraits and now I want to shoot some landscape and maybe some wildlife. Is the 70-200/2.8 IS w/ a T.C. the way to go or should I opt for the 100-400IS?
I definetly want a long lense, but I need some advice on which way to go.
I have a portrait business, but I have recently started using Piezeography BW printing with my Epson 1160. So I'm trying to venture into fine art photography in hopes of selling some prints w/ this system.
Thanks

Don't you think a wide-angle would be appropriate for many landscapes? How about picturing Yosemite falls from top to bottom with a 70-200 or 100-400?

So you may land up buying few more lenses :D

In my opinion 70-200 with 1.4x converter will be better than 100-400 as

1) 70-200 has a constant and bigger aperture 2.8 and in D30 any ISO above 200 is kind of too noisy for me.
2) 70-200 is probably the best zoom lens Canon has (I do not know about 70-200 IS version as optically it is very different from the original 70-200 design). So the image degradation with 1.4x will be minimal and probably will still better than the equivalent focal length of 100-400.
3) Lastly but not least, your 70-200 Zoom with 1.4x will be a faster lens than the 100-400 at the equivalent focal length.

By the way, if you are planning to buy a wide-angle, you may not be happy with Canon and Sigma ultra wide zooms as they all are soft (especially to 28-70 and 85mm trained eye). Rather go for prime wides like Canon 20mm, 24mm, 28mm depending on your requirements.

Sorry, I should have added that I have a Sigma 17-35, so I should say I'm trying to determine my longer lense needs.
Thanks.......
