Here's one from Christmas. EF-S 10-22 USM + hand-held. This wasn't a planned shot as I didn't have my tripod, I guess this was my first night shot as it was before my other Sydney set which I thought was my first attempt.

Testing my 10D with Tamron 17-50mm and 430EX. I did not have a tripod so I used a step ladder and held the camera upright for about 10-15 sec. The lights in the sky is a plane passing by.

Please people, post the camera and lens used, if so the settings as well, but i posted this thread in lens section because i want to see all lenses what can produce, and also the camera even if it is not so important but good to know anyway.

Jason...

Those are some very nice shots of Vegas. Here's one I snapped while I was visiting last weekend. When I was doing night shots, I wish I had a tripod with me. These were taken with 1D/EF 17-35 f/2.8L combo @ 17mm, mode= Av priority, Av=f/4, Tv=1/20, ISO=1250.

I had posted this on one of the other boards for help, but I think it might be good enough to include on here also.

http://jotbin.com/files/ph/20061219/img_2716f.jpg

It was taken with my trusty Sigma 17-70mm, 8 second at f/8 and ISO 100. I also took another exposure at 4 seconds which I overlayed with a layer mask to replace the clock faces to restore the detail that had blown out in the main shot.

Interesting. I've been playing around with 20, 25, 30 second exposures with traffic and sometimes only the car lights come out well and the surroundings are overexposed or vice versa.

I'm trying to figure out how to balance both with my camera in full manual mode. Great shot, anyway.

Interesting. I've been playing around with 20, 25, 30 second exposures with traffic and sometimes only the car lights come out well and the surroundings are overexposed or vice versa.

If you have constant traffic on a well lit road, then you can just meter the scene and should be okay.

Otherwise you need to meter for the surroundings and ignore the traffic to find the correct exposure for the scene. Then adjust the length of the shutter speed (with aperture preferably and/or ISO to compensate) to suit the volume and speed of the traffic.

If traffic is moving slowly you need a longer shutter speed to allow vehicles to pass through the frame, you can look through the viewfinder and time how long it takes a car entering the frame to leave it to get a suitable minimum value. If you do not do this you may end up with dashes rather than continuous lines.

Similarly if there are low volumes of traffic you need the shutter open long enough for enough vehicles to be captured or you will only get faint trails. With fast and constant traffic though, a too long shutter speed means more light being captured and the risk of over exposure. On well lit free-flowing major roads you might only need a shutter speed of a few seconds.

Though none of those are necessarily a bad thing if that is the effect you want. Whether you want light wispy trails, thick bold (overexposed) ones or something in between depends on the background and the mood you want to convey.

One you have the basics, exposure set for the scene and a rough idea of the minimum shutter speed for the volume of traffic, it is (for me anyway) a case of trial and error then to get it right, but usually it is close enough to be happy with the results.

Michael.

On a recent European vacation in Paris, traveling w/o a tripod, I took this shot of what I think is the Academy of Science builing in Paris? Thanks in advance for anyone that knows for sure.

Specs, 5D, 35L, ISO 3200, f1./4 , 1/125th and handheld. I'm floored with how good the 5D is at that high and ISO. No post noise reduction done.

going by their pbase stuff its either a 12-24mm on a 5D or an 8mm on a 300D I think. Either way, nice stuff. Very dramatic although some are a little over distorted for my taste.

Great shot. I would love to visit Nara. Japanese culture intrigues me so much.

You are going to love it.

My wife and I were backpacking throughout japan. We started our trip with a little P&S, we ran into this lovely fella http://www.idioimagers.org/ at Sapporo who let us try out his SLR. When we came back from another excursion, we rushed into Yodabashi and there my obession with photography really kicked in.

Btw, the first lens we bought besides the kit was the 10-22 for the landscape shots.

Cheers!

Wow, some really great shots in here!! I never really tried any night shots until I was on my honeymoon recently.

Both shot with my Rebel XTi, first one using the (gasp!) kit lens, second with my 17-40 f/4L. Unfortunately they were both impromptu, so I didn't have my tripod and I had to resort to finding some stationary object to put the camera on. :o

It could use a bit of adjustment on the lens distortion though.

About the only one I am reasonably happy about is this moon shot. Not much of a contribution as the silly thing always looks the same for everyone, but oh well...

Those photos are magnificent, lighting/exposure is just right... great photos! Makes me want to go to Eastern Europe for a photo shoot and capture all that architectural unspoiled glory the region has to offer! :D
