I also like night shots very much. Here's a couple of my favorite night-time shots. I posted them awhile back in the "Urban" section of this forum. Both taken with 350D and Peleng 8mm fish-eye lens.

I'm particularly fond of this one of the state capitol. I like the "ghosty" blue car I caught with the flash.

This one reminds me of a Christmas Postcard for some reason:

As I recall, these were both taken with the XT and kit lens.

(shouldn't this thread be in "Photo Sharing?") ;-)

I like that "ghosty" effect as well.
i was confusing where to post this thread, but then i said it is a good to place it in Lenses section as i want to know which lenses are used for night shots and i asked to write down camera and lens used.
good shot, i am waiting more from you with those "ghosty"

but really i love that style of life on this photos, only i saw in movies or series.

There are some nice pictures here - and Tareq, I think this is the first time I have seen you post a picture - nice job, do not be too quick to put yourself down!
Only suggestions I would make are to take your pictures while there is still colour in the sky - very dark blue - rather than inky darkness.
also perhaps to use a graduated neutral density to hold back the sky detail.

I hope you will post more pictures, always you are discussing equipment, it is nice to see what you do with it!

first shot i took in Leabnon, and i don't know about photography, and took without tripod as well.
second shot i took with my new camera and lens, but i used CLP instead of ND, i got ND but really i don't know what is the benefit, and i thought it is just for landscapes in day time, and what do you think? should i try to shoot with my 16-35 or 10-22 on my 350D/30D? using ND as well?
I will have more photos later as i feel lazy with hot weather and i am waiting to get better weather soon, and i may travel to Europe, so i have to learn and practice before i travel, and when i see all these great amazing photos i feel myself like all my photos are just junky.

I tired to post few photos on this forum, but i can't find supportive comments, thats why i feel that either to post something good or better no post. I got tons of photos, but i play some edit on some as i am not free for little PP on photos and i am not keen on this, so i created this thread to make me try more and more to post, i will have another trials for night shots later because i love nightshots, but i hope i can get some decent stunning shot as u all do.

Tareq,

i for one feel that posting even your 'bad shots" here is a good thing as long as you ask for some c&c. most of what i know (not alot) i learned by asking other people to critique my shots and than trying to improve.

and just to get the thread back on track:

http://blonde.smugmug.com/photos/51799594-L.jpg

http://blonde.smugmug.com/photos/51799716-L.jpg

these 2 are from the middle east and yes, i need to clean up the seconnd pics a bit more...

Tareq

haha, you can get VERY nice shots no matter where you are. you want some night shots from Israel?
First shot was from Lebanon which is close to Isreal, but that time i didn't do well with my limited gears.
and i think there are some good places in middle east, but not our region (Arabian Gulf Area). maybe in winter it will be better i think, but we can see winter (that if it is winter) once every 5 years.
just i need more encourges so that i can post and try more and more. I all take photos alone and people always keep looking at me everywhere, i am very shy person so that i feel so sad when taking photos and people looking at me and others with alot of gears taking photos without any problems and even people smiling to them, not me. I feel like i am to pushy or offending on this forum, should i stop coming for a while till i can get good enough photos?

No problem, because i love night shots i will do all my best to focus on night shots, at least to get better in something to me is better than taken thousands photos of everything and can't get few good from that.

Pricey to get that effect you just need a busy street and a long shutterspeed! Tripod required and also self timer recomended

1-fit a good lens to the camera
2-place the camera on a tripod
3- turn on the camera, slower the shutter speed.
4-take test shots, keep the shots u find them the best of overall.

thats all what i can do.

I tried to understand what is that on your photo. not so clear detail but i am not aware of what is there.

It's actually a view from my home window. First there's a road with parked cars and one passing by left its light rail to the picture. Behind the cars and threes there's sea and boats lit by the moon.

The intention with this was to capture the mood not the details ;-)

you don't have to havve a good lens. i have a very similar shot that was taken with the kit lens and it looks just the same. because you have to have a tripod, you can close the lens to f9 and even the kit lens looks great in f9.

pretty much:

1) camera mounted on a tripod.
2) about 2 sec shutter speed or more depending on traffic
3) use remote shutter realese or timer
4) take the shot
5) check the histogram and the image and correct the settings as you see fit.

remember, faster shutter to freeze motion and slower shutter to show movement :)

Thanks - I used a tripod. I also took shots as the sun set, but they didn't come out as well. There is an amphitheatre-type plaza across the lake where I set up. No one was there, and this was the height of summer.

nah i didn't do anything to the sky, all it was was the clouds moved during the shutter being released hence the movement of the clouds.

the pp'ing part is the normal levels, curves etc

I love the fountain one. That's deserves a frame and a place on the wall.

agreed

definately a picture worthy to be in the hallway

i just found one more that i like, i call it "Day & Night"

I still use the kit lens for my landscape shots and have no intentions of buying a wide L. I will most likely get the Tamron 17-50 or Tokina 16-50, or the Sigma 17-70. I will probably still keep the kit lens to sell with my XT if I ever sell it.

I still use my kit lens for some landscape and cars, because I have my nd and polarizer for the kit lens, but I just ordered a 77mm polarizer for the 10-22 , so the kit will not see much action soon.

I have a question about sports photography at night. I am new to this forum, actually it is my first time on any forum. I recently bought a Canon Digital Rebel XT, I am using an EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 III lens to take photos of my step-son playing high school football. All of the photos that I take at night are very blurry and I cannot figure out why. If anyone knows what settings I should use your advise would be greatly appreciated.

Well, the reason is you have to have more light to increase shutter speed. Try boosting your ISO up to 800. Use a wide apeture (smaller numbers are wider and let more light in). You also need a shutter speed fast enough to almost freeze action.

Thanks. Surprised the exif doesnt show up - guess the link is to a snap resized by the hosting site.

The horizontal snap : f16 for 25 seconds
The vertical one: f9 for 10 seconds.

Both were taken with the same camera/lens setup.

It was taken with my Drebel. I was about to type Tamron 28-75 and then I noticed that both were actually taken with the kit lens at 18mm :)

Ooh...night photography used to be one of the areas in which I had the greatest interest when it came to photography. Nowadays I am getting more lazy and hence find it hard to have enough discipline to set up a tripod and shoot. There's lots of good shots here, and definitely inspiring, so I feel like going back to it again.

Anyway, I don't have a lot to show at this time, but here's the few I can grab out to share...hope you enjoy it:

First one is one of my favorites, and was taken quite recently while trying out film and an old camera.

I also like night shots very much. Here's a couple of my favorite night-time shots. I posted them awhile back in the "Urban" section of this forum. Both taken with 350D and Peleng 8mm fish-eye lens.

Your first image has got to be one of the best shots Ive ever seen! Great job!

350D, 50mm f/1.8, shutter remote, tripod and patience!

27 mintues to take and 27 minutes for the camera to do its noise reduction!

Mind if I ask how that was pulled off?

Dang, some of these are absolutely wonderful. One of these years I will have the time to go out and have fun at night. Several of you make me want to get a much wider lens than I currently have.
Thank you all for sharing.

24-105 wide open on EOS 5D, handheld, 1/6 sec at 32mm, ISO 1600. NO NR. NO postprocessing.

To all those who say the image stabilizer is useless on short focal length zooms - whatever. Believe whatever you want to believe. I know damn well what works for me. I'm damn glad Canon builds the gear I need too, instead of calling it useless.

17-40 at f/8, 17mm, ISO 100, 15 seconds, mirror lockup, tripod. NO NR.

This one was taken at stupid o'clock (5:30am) from a hotel room. No tripod so I rested the camera on a book that I balanced on the windowsill.

5D, 85mm f/1.8 @ f/8, 30" exposure, ISO 50

Ooops, I should have mentioned the city, too. Sydney - just a couple of weeks ago.
