The monitor is KING! I spend more time with that little piece of hardware than my Canons!
And, I have been burning them up. Max contrast, max brightness. My vidio cards are oh so powerful. And then a hiss, then black...
Truth is I have cheeped out. I'm down to and old 17" Futura...
Help me.
What to buy! Why? And, from which vendor.

If money is not an issue, then I have 2 words for you: Sony Artisan. Once you start using it you'll be instantly addicted to it. Check the specs here: http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=9v7s5JC32ojsuK8L5Hfm79-mvWTaiMtSo-s=?CategoryName=cpu_Displays_CRT&ProductSKU=GDMC520K&Dept=cpu
I unfortunately have a money issue, so I compromised for a LaCie Electron blue (which is not bad at all!!!), and I am very happy with it, but if I could afford it I'd buy the Artisan right now and keep the LaCie as back up.

Or better yet,. one of these;

....this is what I have right next to a 21" G-500 Sony.

In a nutshell though you can get this quality at a rather reasonable price. Either a 21" or a 19" Sony Aperture Grill monitor is what you want... nothing less! Sony's "E" series and "G" series 21" inchers should be running $400-$500.00 (or less)

My advise is, whatever monitor you choose, don't get an LCD. They are easier on your eyes, but won't give you accurate colors.

If I had the bucks it is what I would buy. COmes complete with it's own custom calibration system. It seems to be the choice of many pros.

Hi,
One first word of advice, set your contrast down.
When you use full contrast the lines on the fosfor will bloom resulting in poor detail, which makes working with photo's very difficult.
Recently I switched from CRT to TFT, it's really a matter of priorities.
On the CRT you will have much better blacklevels and the primaries of the colors are correct.
On a GOOD LCD you will get good and accurate colors, and very good detail, I work alot on 1600x1200 and I just love the crispness of my panel on those resolutions.
When you are a professional keep to CRT's, and choose one with a diamatron grill, if you are a prosumer like me also look at the expensive LCD's.
Calibration of the LCD's is however very important to get somewhat good colors, out of the box most are terrible. I run with my contrast on 28 and get a picture that's almost as good as my 22" Iiyama Pro monitor, when you measure you will see that the primaries are off but in normal use this has never caused me any problems. The blacklevel of a LCD however is still not good.
Hope this helps a bit.
Greetings,
Frank
