Last Thursday I purchased my first digital camera: a PowerShot S3 IS. I looked at a lot of cameras and that's the one that fit what I wanted to do and within my budget.
Until now my 'main' camera was my Minolta SRT-202 (purchased new Oct 27, 1977). Yes I'm that old.
So far I love it, considering the short time I have been 'playing' with it.
Registered on this board this morning and been reading the posts all day long. Ton of great informations.
So be gentle, I'm a newbie with digital camera. :)

It's a great camera and you will be able to do a lot of stuff with it. Good luck and welcome.

Welcome. I am fairly new as well and the folks here have been friendly and full of wonderful ideas and lessons. It is great having a place where you can talk about the camera that you own with others. I love my S3. One day I might be able to understand and remember all that it does and struggle with photoshop along the way.

The S3IS is a great camera...Read the manual a couple of times :) There is a lot to learn about it, but the learning is great fun! I have a Minolta SRT MC-II which is still in service!

I have been an owner of the S1 IS for two years until last week where I sold it and upgraded to the S3 IS. Tough it's easier to learn the camera because I've had the S1, it's still an effort. My advice: Don't forget to take pictures all the way while reading the manuals.

I have been impressed with quality I'm getting so far.
Funny thing happened today. At the office the past few days I have been taking picture of Christmas cards for our web site. Mainly because one prof. photograper that were suppose to come for the past 3 weeks did not show up and we needed the pictures.
Today he showed up. He setup everything and start shooting a few cards (took about 1 hour per cards to setup lightning, etc before taking each picture) then we compared his and mine. I don't know the model of his camera but was a Nikon, he had several lens, lighthing equipments, portable table, the works.
Well, my pictures were better colorwise. I checked in photoshop at something like 400-500% magnification and his pictures were sharper with more details. However when I reduced them for the web site, the pictures were the same quality. I could not see the difference except for the slight color difference as stated.
Even my boss (company owner) and his son, told me they were not impressed with the quality of his pictures. We're keeping the ones I took. :D
Moral of the story: the S3 IS can rival a much better, more expensive camera under some circunstance.

Thanks for sharing that! Good to know my "little P&S" is as good (in some circumstances) as a "pro" camera. :D

Welcome Sarouk. I am sure you will love your S3 as much as I love my S2. There are some great people on this forum who are only too willing to share their expertise and knowledge. Don' t forget to check out their galleries too, there's some great pictures posted that give us newcomers "hope". And don't be afraid to ask questions.........
