Why? This would clearly be a $4000--$5000+ lens. Anyone spending that kind of money likely really needs this lens. If that is the Case you could always purchase the same lens as a Nikkor, I doubt it gives up much if anything to a Canon L.
when you need lenses this costly the camera body is almost disposable.

I'd say if they re-do this, it would be f/2 with IS. That's where my feeling is.

I would agree. I think that they would have to sacrifice something to add the IS.

so the real question, would it be black like the 135 f/2 and the 200 f/2.8 or would it be white?

white as in hot conditions, it would warm up and performance degrade less!

I don't think adding IS will need them to sacrifice a lot. See for example the new 70-200 f/4 IS.

It will certainly be white, as one of there showcase in the sidelines on TV lenses ;)
It could certainly be f/1.8 regardless of what Nikon did with there's.

So Canon should stop making the 500mm/600mm and 400mm f/2.8 as well?
I just don't know what this post means, Canon shoul care. They don't want people going Nikon to get this lens.

Canon f/1.8 200L: photodo MTF Score 4.8. No other lens has this score or higher. (http://www.photodo.com/product_61.html).
Maybe that's why :-)

Come on Canon, re-release this lens with IS

Even without IS, I would be happy if Canon re-released the 200/1.8 lens
I got to play with it over the past weekend.
Still catching up from then.
I rented it for the weekend. From the little I have reviewed as I am still doing backup archive. NICE lens.
While this year I could have gotten by with my 70-200/2.8L IS because the lights were brighter on the stage.
Shooting this year was at f2.0 to f2.8, 1/125 to 1/200, and ISO 400 or 800.
Last year was at f3.2, 1/80, ISO 1600.
Huge difference.
Focus was a bit finickier then last year, but overall much better shots.
When Archive is done and I can get to them, I will post some of the better ones.
I am thinking a 300/f1.2 would have been perfect. (I dread to think how big that one would be)
My one comment is,
the 200/f1.8 is defintely not for handholding for more then 3 to 5 shots max.

I'd love to see the lens, but I suspect that for my occasional use, I could not really afford it. This would be a lens that Canon could produce about 1000 copies of every 2 or 3 years and fully satisfy the normal demand.

Well the front element would be 250mm in diameter
EDIT: Actually 250mm is larger than the front element on the EF1200!!!

At least it would be shorter then the 1200mm, but probably not cheaper.

Both those 2 lens are small, and likely not used in outdoor sports. The 70-200 would probably win over the 200 prime. The 135 would be used just indoors.
The 200 1.8 was white because its super huge. If a new model came out, it would be huge. If you've seen a 200 1.8 up close, you'll see how massive that thing is. When I first saw it, I thought it was a 300 2.8, but then closer inspection showed it to be something else. :)

If it's anything like the gorgeous Nikkor 200/2 VR it'll be both huge and stunning.
And very pricey.

wow this thread is awesome, some people spot on 2 years ago with a 200 2.0 IS prediction
Im about to shoot with this lens tonight as my wedding guy just got it. Ill try and shoot from his balcony with the 200 2.0 IS at f4 and with my 70-200 f4 IS at f4 just to see it get completely blown away. I might even go f2.0 vs f4 =)

Big LOL! ... Have you ever heard of heat problems in black lenses, such as
from the Nikons?
