Hi,

I just got a new Epson 4490 Photo scanner.

Here's my problem:

I am attempting to scan slides for entry into a juried exhibition.

The exhibit guidelines require that the scans be 72 dpi and 600 pixels at the longest edge.

However, my slides look like mud at this setting.

I cannot begin to get good scans until I go to 600 dpi. But when trying to edit these crisp scans in Photoshop down to 72 dpi, again they look terrible, and they get A LOT smaller.

What I am I doing wrong, and how can I resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Scan in as high a resolution as you want, 600dpi should be plenty. Resize down using photoshop, forget the dpi value and just make sure it's 600px wide/long. Make sure you look at it at 100% in photoshop, or 50%, other magnifications will look crappy.
