HI to all,
I was getting ready to buy a 24-70 2.8 L to use in the next 2 weeks. I just read on another forum that there is a problem with this lens' lens hood mounting ring falling off. Is this a real problem with this lens? Also how do you guys compare this lens with the 28-135 IS? I have that lens, but was thinking the 24-70 might give me sharper pictures, and I also like the faster speed. I hate to spend the big bucks though, if this lens is going to fall apart and not be any better than the 28-135.
I need some opionios fast because I was planning to buy the lens next week to use at a couple of banquets before Christmas.
Thanks.

I have the 24-70 f/2.8L. It is built like a tank. It is a fast +sharp lens. I have never used the lens you have so I can't compare the two. Many of the pictures in the following link were shot with the 24-70 f/2.8L.

For the price the 28-135mm IS is a nice lens... but the 24-70 f/2.8 will positively clean it's clock regarding sharpness!!!! :D It is quite simply the best zoom lens you can by in the given focal length. I can only dream of owning one.

Yeah, I must concur with both Scott and CDS here. I use the 24-70L regularly and "built like a tank" describes it very well. I've also heard the rumor you spoke of, about the hood ring falling off. So far, I've haven't run across this issue. I don't personally know of anyone else who has had this problem. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone without the slightest hesitation.
The 28-135 IS is a certainly nice lens. The price difference between the two is rather substantial. I guess the value would depend on what you are shooting and why. I have used both and most vocally prefer the 24-70L over the 28-135 IS. You will definately see a difference in image sharpness and contrast. Whether that difference is worth the extra bucks to you would be the question at hand. Only you can decide that.
The two L lenses that I would emphatically say should be in most anyone's bag (if one is even interested in L glass to begin with) are the 24-70L and the 70-200L 2.8 IS. The latter being my most favorite lens I have ever used on any camera at any point in time. The 24-70L is a very close second. But you know the drill... opinions vary!
Take care!

I have had the lens since the first day it was out and there no problems to report to date. It is much faster in A/F over the 28-70 L and is just as sharp I can not tell the differance. This lens is as good as it gets just cant beat this lens and if you need any service canon is really fast. I do not see any problems here. Just buy it and you will love it. I love mine.

I have both. There is no comparison. They are simply in different leagues. If you can justify the extra cost, buy one. It's an investment.
FWIW, my lens hood has never fallen off. If anything, it's a little snug.

Bill,
It is real, I've heard about it a number of times. But it is still one of my best lenses and it is usually "operator error" that breaks the ring.
See http://www.robgalbraith.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=182511&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#Post186861 for a few examples. The original poster was pissed when I tried to ask if she might have anything to do with the ring "falling off"
Mines fine....

I can duplicate the failure on my own 24-70 if I wish. All I have to do is give that ring a good, hard twist. The obvious question is: "Why would anyone want to do that?"
Answer: You wouldn't, unless you thought you were turning the focusing ring.
Looks like operator error to me.

I have it...and love it.
I purchased it a week after it came out. If anything my lens hood fits too tight, but that's better than it falling off.

Thanks to all. I just got back from Pro Photo Supply here in Houston with my lens in hand. Only shot a couple of frames, but wow!
Thanks,

I had the lens hood ring on my 24-70 come adrift just before a trip to Alaska in June. Unfortunately it wasn't back from Canon in time for the trip. When it came back the lens hood bayonet fit very nicely whereas before it was just a bit snug which may have contributed to the failure. I don't tend to be hard on equipment so I didn't feel responsible for the failure. Even with the failure, the lens was usable as long as you didn't use the lens hood. I could see that I probably could have just torqued the loose ring back on but I wasn't going to take a chance on damaging the mounting flange. Been there, done that!
As to the lens, magnificent! It is by far the sharpest of my three present L lenses but it should be as the 16-35 and 100-400 are not known to be quite as sharp. I'm planning on purchase of the 500 f/4 prime telephoto so I will see how that compares. That is apples and oranges, however.
I'm sure you will find it a truly satisfying lens. Enjoy and good luck with it.

Just buy it there is nothing to compare - if the hood mount fails get Canon to fix it.
regards.
