I recently saw an online ad for a used 300mm f/2.8L IS (didn't see it here, so I hope I'm not harshin' anyone's mellow). The price had been reduced to $3,600.00.
A new copy can be had for only about $300.00 more.
Why would anyone not buy a new copy?

Steve:
Harshin' my mellow?
I didn't know I had a mellow. But then I'm old and crumudgenly! Was that the thing I lost back in the winter of 02, when we had that global warming thing that caused it to snow in Phoenix, during July, at night, upside down?
Thanks for sharing.
As to your comment. Why, indeed.

well if its a very nice clean copy..maybe for someone who has been saving and saving and saving..To get another $300 to buy new would take much mroe time. I would say thats a good reason to buy the used one..

Yes, but otherwise, senseless, I say. I agree, Steve (imagine that  ). I'd have to say I probably wouldn't buy one of these unless it were significantly closer to $3k than to $4k. I was actually looking at a non-IS for $2400.

I think if it were me I'd keep saving my pennies. If it was difficult for me to scratch up the $6500, that means I worked really hard to get that far. That means I can't afford a used lens to crap out on me. That means I need that warranty. That means I'd appreciate it even more.

It must be a California thing, because I've never heard that in my life :)

Seems like you can ask that question about nearly all used photo equipment... Nearly always I look at the asking prices for various stuff and they're around 90% of new. In that situation, I'll just buy new.
