Ive been a long time powershot user and decided to go to the DSLR before i hit Europe next month. First off i found the camera for $680 shipped with the supplied Canon 18-55mm Lens... at the last second i decided to forego the supplied lens and buy a sigma 28-70mm with the canon body. So i ended up only spending $720 for both. Of course now that i found this forum i am seeing that most people are going with the Tamron lens over the sigma... however being a newbie the tamron is like 3 times the price and i think i need to get the hang of the camera first.
So the question is .... would you have stayed with the canon supplied lens or is the sigma the better choice on a budget? Later on i can afford a more quality lens.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forums. :)
If you are on a budget then you did good. The XT is awesome so anylens is good to start with as first one. Play with the camera take picture of everything, inside, outside, people, cars, babys etc... When you think you are being held back from capturing that special moment then go buy a peice of glass that will help you do that. That is my 2 cents and how I started.

Congrads on the XT. For travel, I assume you would want to bring zoom. Kit lens is fine if you happy with the zoom range.
If you want for zoom with one lens, Canon EF-S 17-85IS.
IF you want a longer tele lens, 70-200L F4 or 70-300IS.
If you want a trun wide angle, EF-S 10-22

First Welcome to POTN!
Second you will enjoy the XT. Get out and learn your new toy. Let me offer a piece of advice that was offered to me: Read your manual then read it again oh and did I mention read your manual.
Once you have decide what you enjoy shooting the most and what your needed range is, then you can decide what lens you need if your sigma is not up to your standards. Like Jim said read the FAQ section- there is some great info there.

I'm guessing it's the 28-70 f2.8-4 as you say the Tamron is 3x more expensive. From reading a couple of sites the main differences between the 2 lenses you talk about
(Sigma 28-70 f2.8-4 and the Tamron 28-75 f2.8) are as follows.
Tamron is a constant f2.8 apperture throughout the zoom range. This is very useful particularly in lower light when you need faster shutter speeds mainly at the longer end. If you don't shoot much in low light then not a huge issue
Tamron is sharper, has better contrast. I've read too that the Sigma is poor for CA and flare.
Most of the reviewers consider the Sigma a bargain and it certainly does look like a great cheap starter lens. If you are happy with the images it produces that's all that matters.
The Tamron is a great lens. I loved mine but it's now a backup to my 24-105 f4L IS.
Hope you have a great time with your kit.

Welcome to the forum Ryan83se!:D
XT is a great camera, you'll enjoy it. I have owned/used the 18-55mm kit lens, Sigma 24-70f/2.8 (both DG and non-DG), and Tamron 28-75f2.8 before. I have not used the Sigma 28-70mm that you mentioned but based on its review, it is probably rated at the bottom of all the 4 lenses. For the price, the 18-55mm kit lens is a great value. I have taken alot of good photos with it. I have to part with it when i sold my 300D, as a package.
I know now it's too late to say "shoulda, woulda, coulda". So, practice with what you have and ask as many question as you can.;)
