im currently residing in australia and looking at purchasing the ixus 400.
with the aust dollar doing so well im thinking of buying it from america and saving some cash. but i called canon australia and they said they would not honour the warantee out of the country of purchase.
so i can either decide to pay an extra $200 and get warantee or risk it and save some cash.

my question is; has anyone EVER heard of a ixus 400 just breaking on its own or having any faults from factory?

It is a risk. Faults are few and far between. You will hear some scary stories here, but remember that most people who post are the ones that are having problems with their cameras. Many posters are having problems period...nothing to do with their cameras. :) You won't hear from too many perfectly satisfied users posting "yippee" posts.

I've purchased cameras with USA warranties and given them as gifts to family and friends in India. I registered the product here, giving their name and my address. If the camera gets hosed for any reason, then they can claim warranty service and they can say that they are just visiting India and insist on Canon India Ltd. to fix the problem. They will. I've had my stuff fixed before overseas when I was travelling.

You may have to do the same. If you come abroad, use a friend's or family home address to register yourself and ask Canon AU to fix it.

But considering how things go, you'll probably be just fine saving the $200 and living with your camera. This is similar to the gray market items we get here in the USA where they do not have USA warranties and tend to be 15-20% cheaper. They sell, and at that, they sell well here.

I bought a new Ixus400 from an internet retailer in the UK and it broke down with an E18 (lens extension) error 2 months after purchase. The firm replaced it straight away but I would be wary of a similar problem occurring without a warranty protection. Several posts to this forum about this error but these are probably just the few unlucky owners. My replacement is now working well.
