Hi guys,

well I have had my 5D for a week or two now and I realise I have loads to learn about lighting and framing and exposure.... not to mention getting into flash...... the standard in here is getting so good that I question even posting.... but here is one of my mum talking to my wife and getting deep into my wifes job as a nurse. I saw an opportunity to sneak a few portraits while she was chatting. I really like this one cos it says so much about my mum and how she listens......

what do you think? how would any of you tackled this?

It was taken with natural light to my right from a patio window, and a 70-200mm f2.8 @ 145mm ... it was at 1/200 f3.5

I like your post very much! I think you handled everything appropriately! Lighting, framing, exposure, etc. But most of all, as you said, it says a lot about your Mum and how she listens! That's the best part!

Enjoy your camera & keep posting!

I honestly don't see how you could improve on this. The natural light is fantastic, I love her hands, the crop and, as you mention, her deep attentive look. The colors are great and it's very sharp.
This is a great shot and thank you for sharing it.

I think you've got a nice shot here but it seems a little dark to me. I wonder if an extra 2/3 to 1 stop might do the trick (or some PS). That's just me though.

Very nicely done. I would leave it as is. I thought a little lighter might be better, but after another look, I like it as shot.

That is a great picture of your mother. There is really little I think you could do to improve it. It captures a personality and realy beauty. It is a great picture. Good work!

wow thanks all for your lovely comments. I really appreciate them especially knowing how good you all are in here. I took several but by the time I was taking the 3rd or fourth she was looking at me and it was a different shot all together.

I know what you mean Nick and Az2africa it could be a little dark. I was trying to get as much detail in the face as possible to bring out the character. A tad lighter might have improved it. I may play around in PSP and see how it looks.

and thanks Kathy :-) but it does make me feel old that a picture of my mum makes you miss your gran ;-) tehe.... mind you I am old, I just dont feel it....

no worries Kathy, I didn;t feel bad. ;-) But thanks for saying it.....

ok. A few said it needs to be lighter so just to see I up'd contrast and btighness by 20% each in Paint shop pro X..... does it improve it?

I like the lighter one, but it is a beautiful picture either way.

I think I like it a little brighter now that it is posted to compare it to the first one. I really like it. I think it is perfect the way it is now that it is brighter. I thought it was good first, but I think I like it better after the adjustment.
