There are several choices available for the Rebel XT
There is the wired one that connects to the camera and there are at least 2 varieties of this; Canon make one and there is a cheaper version available via eBay - look for RS-60E3 (that is the Canon model number). (This remote switch, with a 2-ft. cable, replicates all the functions of the camera AEs shutter- release button.)
There is also a wireless infra red remote that works with that camera - the Wireless Controller RC-1 (This miniature infrared transmitter operates at ranges of up to 5m/16.4 ft., and may be set for either instant shutter release or 2-second delay. The RC-1 may also be used to activate mirror-lock and bulb-shutter functions.)
Hope this helps.

If you live in North America you can also use a Zap-Shot (http://www.zap-shot.com/) wireless remote control. I don't believe it's legal outside North America though.

You can also make your own (wired) very easily... I forget the thread which mentioned it now, A google search should sort you out though.

I went with the wired . it can be extended if needed . Tried the IR one to start with my but had problems so sent it back, then Canon did the firmware update that fixed the issue I had . by this time the wired one was in my hands so stuck with it :)

I also have the cheap IR trigger from eBay and I think its actually better than the RC-1 Canon one as it has instant shutter release mode AND 2 sec delay mode, plus a handy light built in.
