I just went to http://www.canoneos.com site and noticed the red "New" startbust was removed from the 30D camera and lenses.

Canon is getting ready to make announcements and update their site within days.

My prediction is new cameras with DiGic III chip, GPS and OED displays. The 1Ds and 1D combined into one camera 1Ds Mark III (22MP and selectabe 4 or 9 fps for under $7000), 3D (17MP, selectable 4 or 9 fps and weather sealed version of 5D for under $5000) and 12MP 5D.

Wow, I'll take a 3D and a 1Ds Mark III please. :D

When a company updates a Web site, the updated URL (perhaps other info, too) has to be populated around all of the backbone servers on the Web, and that can take some time.

P.S. I'm sure I didn't get that precisely right, so will you Web jockies please be easy on me?

Have Fun,

Photokina doesn't begin until Sept 26.

Why is Canon making an announcement on 8/24?

Surely they'll be holding some announcements back for Photokina.

Good point on the gap.

My best guess is the 8/24 announcements will be consumer-oriented for Christmas stocking of the shelves. This is around Canon's normal Christmas announcement date - the original Digital Rebel and the 20D were each announced at the end of August.

If they decide to hold any announcements for Photokina they would likely be the Pro model(s) and perhaps lens upgrades.

However, the teaser Israeli Web site mentions something bigger for August, so who really knows. . .

Why does canon still have the 20d on their USA site sicne the 30D is next to it?

Because it's still in production, unlike the 10D which was discontinued pretty shortly after the 20D was announced. If you recall from the press releasae, Canon chose to continue producing the 20D and selling it for $100 less than the 30D.

And why would someone even consider the 20D now, for a paltry $100 difference in price?!?!?! Maybe if the differential placed it squarely in the middle between the 350 and the 30D...

And so if you have lots of inventory and few people wanting to buy the older model, most companies would either lower the price permanently or offer special rebates for a time period in order to reduce that inventory of older stock! doesn't take an MBA to figure that one out IMHO!
