No - you're not missing anything.
I don't think you can zoom in movie mode.
Mike.

Thanks, but even Minolta Dimage X20 can zoom during taking video. Is this problem only S400 or Canon?

Hi,
I dropped my camera (s230) a while ago and ever since the LCD just goes black and then starts working occasionally. now its not working again,
do you know what the problem is? do you think Canon will still know i dropped or can i tell them it came like that??
thanks

My friend dropped her S400 camera while the lens wqas open and basically sandwiched the lens together (not a pretty sight). She sent the camera back not saying anything about the dropping of the camera and they fixed it. Try it out, cant hurt.

im pretty sure you can adjust the zoom in movie mode, however you have to adjust it before you start recording, and once you start the zoom will be fixed at whatever you set it

Wheelman is correct, you must set your zoom position first then shoot. No zooming during record is possible.

Yeah that's roght. And it's not just the S400, all Canon's do this. I don't know the reason though. Always seemed kind of silly to me...

shiningstardv you are partly correct!
All Canon's did this until a few weeks ago when Canon launched the S1 IS,
Which can take one hour movie clips (with sufficient CF Card space) in VGA mode, and zooming is possible. Not sure the S1 IS will be a hit though, 10X optical, only 3 Megapixels and runs off AA's (what gives?????????) - the Pro1 IS is a better draw.
