I am using a Canon 420EX flash. It is very good in all aspect except it's inability to work as a master. The Autofocus assist of Canon 420EX works great also. But now I am considering returning it and buy a Sigma EF500 Super. Heard it is a Canon 550EX clone with all the features of 550EX at 420EX price. Do any one using this flash? Any review will be of great help.

hi...
been said here many times...
sigma flash does NOT work with the D-30 in ettl mode and is a nightmare in manual mode...
(spoken from personal experience)
avoid disappoinment...for $270 you can have a brand new 550 ex from delta international : )

Actually it does work with a D30 in ETTL mode.
The only difference between Sigma 500 and 550EX is that Sigma's color temerature is a little cooler.
Thanks,

You're wrong bob. The Sigma works in Ettl and fp mode with the D30. Why is manual mode a nightmare? It works perfectly for me.

i dunno where YOU guys got your ef500
but i purchased one from b&h the day after i got my d-30...
it did NOT work in ettl mode with my camera, and in manual mode...the exposure was either completely blown out or too dark...even with -2/3 ev and flash at low power...the pictures were WAY too blue and cool for my tastes...
why bother?
please check out this other post...
EF 500 problem (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1033#4692)
as mentioned...the salesman i spoke to after suspecting problems with my brand new EF500 explained that it does NOT work in anything but manual mode with the d-30...
perhaps I'M one of the few people with this problem...but once i bought the 550 the problem went away soooo....
i'm not wrong. i know what i saw...this isn't my first "real" camera...so it isn't the mistake of a total amateur...believe me...i didn't want to shell out another $200 for flash if i didn't have to...
how else would we be able to afford all these lenses : )
so...i'll leave it at this:
good luck...your results may vary : )

Bob,
Either you didn't read the manual or you have the regular EF-500 and not the super. The super works fine in ETTL as well as FP mode. Check out this collage from my website, most of which were done with ETTL mode on the EH-500 Super, some in FP mode as well...
