Does anyone know what camera is 'the next step up' from the rebel XT? I am looking for a new camera and may be able to afford something better than the XT. Thanks

well as of right now the 20D/30D is the next step up..But in 2days canon should be releasing some new bodies...the new XT wich some think its called XTi or 370D should be out and be upgraded..so you might wanna see what they release

I really wouldnt reccomend going a step up unless you have prior experience with D/SLR the XT has everything you need to get off to a good start.

The new XTi is probably going to be priced a bit higher and I personaly would rather spend the money on good lenses right now and later on upgrade the camera. but its up to you depending on price and what you want out of a camera.

Spending more than you need to on a camera body means you have less to spend on more important things, like lenses. There are many other accessories which can help improve your pictures, like a flash unit or a tripod, so be careful not to bust your budget too soon.

You may want to step up to a 20D or 30D simply because it feels better in your hands. But don't make that decision without thoroughly understanding the different capabilites of each. dpreview.com is a good place for comprehensive reviews.

the information released on the 400D (XTi) is pretty nice, 10.1mp, same AF as the 30D and a Sensor Cleaning system built in, Personally, I'd go for the XTi over a 30D at this juntcture, until the update on the 30D comes out (who knows when)

It is certainly tempting to look at going up to the next level of camera. But as has been said, that kind of money is better spent on new lenses and other associated items, unless you have a specfic need for a feature the new camera has, or you have out grown the capabilities of the current camera.

I heard this rule once, and it made sense:

Camera Body price * 4 = initial outlay.

That roughly covers the body, a lens, CF cards, tripod and other little thing. :)

This is how the general sceme goes for Canon
Rebel line: entry level
30D (xxD, meaning 10D/20D/30D etc): for more serious amateurs, possible pros
5D: Full Frame for serious enthusiasts and pros
1D Mark IIN: primarily for working pro sports and photojournalists
1Ds Mark II: for mainly for professional studio photogs

If I were you, I'd consider the 30D

One step up will now be 400D/XTi

Worth a look I think...

XTi is still more of a sidestep than a stepup. I'd still say the 20d/30d.

well yes the XTi is a a more of sidestepits kind of more like 2 steps forward one step back as they moved forward with the 10mp on a 1.6 and the sensor cleaning but back on the IQ if i HAD the XT i would stay but since i dont have the either so im going with the XTi
