View Full Version : Another benefit of using Camera Raw (?)

Hi All,

As far as I have understood the typical sensitivity in luminosity of a CCD pixel in digital cameras is about 10-12 bit. Does anyone know if this is also the case for the G3? The typical JPEG RGB image with a color depth of 8 bit per channel (24 bit total per pixel) is then created using 3 CCD pixels (one for each base color, R, G and B) and some de-mosaicing algorithm to give each of these a unique RGB color. As far as I can see this means that the original 10 or 12 bit resolution in luminosity that the CCD actually has, although being utilized by the de-mosaicing algorithm to create the overall image, is lost in the final image. So by using camera raw, and working in 16 bit per channel mode you gain extra color depth which could come in very handy if, say, you needed to drastically brighten the shadows of a image.

Am I right or wrong here?

Thx,

Casper

That's the main benefit of raw mode. G3 saves 12 bits AFAIK.

Yes, you are right.
