Hello,
I am new to digital photography. I am just starting to learn about the G-3. I try a little more each day. Can anyone enlighten me why sometimes the camera will not take an exposure when you press the fire button. Sometimes you press it and many seconds later it will fire. Can anyone help?

This usually happens when the G3 is having some difficulty focusing, as in low light situations. Usually, if you have favorable light the delay is reasonably short.

a "hyperfocal" setting will help you in birthday party situations.
basically you set the apperature to F4.5, and the manual focus to 5 ft. and save the setting in one of the custom settings...
it does pretty well as long as you're further than 2 ft away from the subject.

For more information on hyperfocal distance, go to these links:

Remember that the more things that the camera has to figure out for itself, the longer the time will be in between pressing the shutter button and the shutter actually tripping. Anything set to "auto" just adds delay. If the camera has to focus the lens, meter the light and determine the ISO speed, gauge and set the white balance, set both the shutter speed and the lens aperture...it will take time. The more of these things that you can set manually, the quicker it will be. Manually preset all of the items that you can get away with, and your delay will be at a minimum.
