Hi - my long-awaited Canon 24-70 f/2.8L arrives on Monday. I will use it on my 10D. I want to get several filters for my new lens. Are ultra-thin filters required (to avoid vignetting at wide angles), or will standard filters work OK?

Thanks.

I use standard filters (UV, CPL) on mine without any problems. Probably not a good idea to stack them though. Just be sure to put good glass (Canon, B+W) in front of that great lens.

Remember that, unless you use this lens on a 35mm film camera or the 1Ds digital, vignetting will probably not be a problem due to the reduced sensor size of the 10D. The best way to check for vignetting is to go outside, stop the lens down all the way in manual and hit the depth of field preview while looking at an unblemished expanse of sky through the filter in question. If you see any significant darkening in the corners there is a problem. That said, I have used an ordinary circular polarizer which is quite thick on my 24-70 with no visible vignetting. This is on a D60 which has the same sensor size as the 10D.
