What's up everyone. This is my first post here. I'm a proud G3 owner for almost two months...

I really having the ability to shoot without a flash with the G3 - it works really well at the shows that i've tried so far.

i shot these at F3.5 1/60 - ISO 400

some of the shots were 30-40 feet from the stage.

go to "full size" at the bottom of the screen.

Great shots!

Digicams are excellent for this sort of work, this site has a couple of mine (the two shots on the right hand side):

I started using the flash, but the images need the stage lighting for the real fell and effect.

I take every opportunity I get now to do this sort of stuff!

F3.5 1/60 - ISO 400 and what else? Were you using Manual with these settings? These look great.

hey guys. thanks for the feedback, i'm stoked i finally got some shots i could be proud of.

i did use the manual setting, i think i put it on flourescent white balance at one point to try to saturate the color.

the shutter was the tricky part, holding it over my head steady is not the easiest thing to do. i used my fingernail to gradually press in the shutter until it fired. not "pushing" on the shutter button, but squeezing, in a way.

sort of like opening a bottle with a bic lighter, you know? that's the trickiest part.

i was shocked at how clear the images came out in that low light. i barely had to use neat image at all. in fact, on a couple of those. all i did was use the unsharpen mask. i think it helps when you size them down.

i was second guessing my decision to buy this camera for the last month or so. you know, wondering if i should have gotten a smaller one, or whatever. s45, a80. but after seeing the performance at this show and at night in general, i am totally convinced i made the right deciscion, night pics are my favorite, and this camera allows me to take some great ones.

G3 rocks!

Agreed! You've got some very nice shots.

I have had the G3 for about 9months now after two *erghh* Kodak consumer digitals. Band (and low light photography in general) was the main reason for going with the G3.

When at gigs I never use the flash to capture the proceedings for the very reason that I find using the flash strips the soul out of the images captured. My experience with the G3 at gigs is that it is a very hit-and-miss althought his is mainly due to the gigs I attend with small venues with limited lighting (and also the fact that I am relatively new to photography).

I find that I like to get as close as possible (which is easier at small gigs), I set the F2.2-3.0 and lengthen my shutterspeed as much as I can. Usually I work in AV mode.

Anyway...enough ranting...in case people are interested my images are on display at http://www.rocksluts.net.au under bands and events. Constructive feedback is appreciated!

Cheers

Angus

What's the shutter speed?

How did you get your camera to focus? I know I've had focusing issues before in low light and low-light contrast situations.

G3Hawaii: Shutterspeed varies depending on the the gig and the amount of lighting. I usually let the camera set that itself. Lately I've done this by shooting in Av mode.

The blur in many of the pics is indicative of this, because often when I'm shooting the camera shake warning is on. Fortunately, I kinda like that effect or I'm willing to accept the blur to avoid using the flash.

I can tell you an exact shutterspeed if you can name the gig though.

Pradeep1: I am really just experimenting with the camera...it's my first "real" camera and I've never had any training. Thus the successful results I have achieved have been through trial and error and also by taking a large number of photos at a gig and hoping to get some quality shots at the end of the day.

An example is a couple of nights ago when I took photos at The Living End's show at the Gold Coast (Qld Australia). I ended up taking 202 shots from which only 33 were of a standard that I would put up on my site. As I practice I hope to improve my hit rate.
