Don't take any pictures in direct sun, if the sun is out find a shady spot. In direct sun the snow will be severely overexposed. Overcast conditions give the best light for portraits IMO. Zoom in close to the face so that it fills the frame. Note the shutter speed and aperture. Set the camera to manual and use those settings. Then you won't have to worry about the bright snow throwing off the exposure.

Keep the camera warm. The battery will die very fast especially when using the lcd screen when it gets cold. Keep a small camera bag with a chemical heat pack inside. After every couple pictures, put it in the bag to warm up.

Good tip I been thinking about the problem. Think I will check out some suitable bags for cold weather stuff.
