Thanks Alan. I was at f/5.6 and 1/250 of a second to get this. I don't think I could have gotten the shot with a slower shutter speed. It's a constant learning curve.

how far away were you from the hummer at the time, and where were you sitting/standing/podding in relation to the feeder? just out of curiosity

The photo was taken while sitting at my desk with a decent prop for elbows. I was about three to four feet away. The camera level was maybe 6-10 inches below the level of the hummer.

Hey, thanks Sindri! I actually have more fun just sitting and watching but I can't pass up the chance for a decent photo.

Did very well with this shot James, it's a good flight shot with a nice fan tail spread out. Also nice colours to it, well done.

Ahh, your desk is out side? or is this hanging right outside your office/house, seen out of an open window?

Close. It feels like I'm outside when I open the window. I have the hummingbird feeder less than a foot outside the window and the two dowels that appear to be coming out the monitor are perches for the other birds and their feeder. I have photographed deer eating at the bird feeder as well.

Back in 2004 I had one deer nosing the window, the screen messed up my shot (that and the fact I had a long zoom with a subject 3 feet away) so i took them off and put them in the garage. The next month a huge buck was at the bird feeder and i was able to get the photo because of that.

Excellent capture. I just love how the body and head of the bird are so darned sharp yet the wings and tail are blurred in flight. Absolutely stunning.

Thank you ngannet. I only get about 15% keepers shooting the hummers in flight.

wow this is a beautiful shot! possibly one of the best shots i have seen of the hummingbird but i havent looked at many. this birds wings must flap pretty fast? coz i have never seen a photo that has stopped the wings. Great shot of a good looking bird.

Thanks Justin. The Hummingbird beats it's wings between 10-80 times per second.

Hello Ron. Coming from the Godfather of bird and chipmunk (skwerl) photography I'll take that as a compliment. Thank you kindly.
