View Full Version : Has Canon Missed Xmas?

Hello from Kosovo,
It seems that for the last couple of months there has been a great deal of speculation on this forum that Canon should be about due to release a new digital model. I've seen strings that talked about an updated 1D as well as rumors of a new model to fill the gap between the 10D and 1Ds. Seeing as how the holiday season is almost upon us and Canon seems to be struggling to fill orders on the 10D and Rebel D, I guess I'm just a victim of wishful thinking. Anyway, if anyone has heard anything I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. Take care and stay safe.

Personally, I don't think that the next generation 10D is the kind of camera that one goes out buys as a Christmas present. I certainly would not have wanted my "significant other" to make this kind of purchase for me without my input. Plus I always hated knowing what was under the tree.

In Canada, there seems to be an adequate supply of the 10D and Rebel.

I'm sure that Canon is working hard on the next version and as soon as we see big price drops in the 1Ds we will probably know it is just around the corner.

The next DSLR from Canon should be a 1D update and will properbly be announced at PMA2004 in February, just in time to get lots of them out to the Pros for the Olympics later in the year.
There will NOT be a 3D between the 10D and 1D - it makes no sense as the 10D fills place of the EOS-3 in the DSLR line-up.

The Rebel takes the part of the 'Christmas' camera!

Agreed WRT the 300D

What makes more sense:

Sell a replacement for the 10D (20,000 sales at $~2,000 US with a margin of ~$1,000 = ~$20,000,000 profit)

-OR-

Sell the 300D (250,000 sales at ~$1,000 with a margin of ~$400 = ~$100,000,000 profit)

*the profits are speculation as are the number of sales for the product intros. That being said, this is an important part of the business rationale behind these decisions

I agree Andy. The Rebel is Canon's premiere Christmas SLR. They haven't missed anything...

Canon announces there DSLRs like clockwork,. one in February for PMA,. one in late Summer/early Fall (usually around Photokina) (sp?)

This year it was 10D for PMA, and D-Rebel early fall.

It's been that way since the D30 and 1D

Thank you all for the info. It looks like I'll be waiting for February before I can get my latest photo fix.

I didn't even know they'd cancelled it this year...

1. The possible release of the next DSLR.
2. I will be in a good financial position to buy one.

But mostly #1, as outlined by Cyber Dyne Systems in the post prior to mine. But even if its wrong, #2 still applies.

Rumor has it they are working on a hybrid of the 1D and 1DS. A full frame sensor in the 11 MPixel range at 3fps with a mode change switch/setting to read out only the center 4-6 (?) MPixels at 8 fps.

Wrong - at least not for February at PMA.
I proposed this idea for a future development a short while ago on another forum - so the royalties should come to me so I can buy the updated 1D!

I didn't say it was coming out in February, or even any time in the next year. Only that they are working on it. That is the rumor among news agency professionals and CPS members I deal with. But its so nice to be set straight by someone who knows the inner details of Canon R&D efforts!

Personally I do think there is a gap in the canon system and a camera is needed. Lets see you can get a 1Ds for $8,000 or the next best thing the 10D in terms of pixels. There is a huge gap in performance form the 10D and the 1Ds. For me the 1D needs more pixels. I got my hands on one form canon CPS and tested it for 2 weeks and found that my 10D raw files are better for my wedding work. I did like the performance of the 1D but not enough to buy it. We need a camera with a full frame chip with out the 1Ds price. I am sure canon will be the first out with one and I am sure 2004 it will surface. The 10D and the Digital rebel are now to close and are almost the same camera out side of the body and minor functions.
