I just started a 14-day stretch here at work. That's two whole weeks without a day off. I volunteered for it, though. It's going to buy me a new 100mm f/2.8 macro lens and a few other goodies. :D

Hopefully I can squeeze in a little time after work tomorrow to drive around and look for a couple windows to shoot. Too bad I can't go back up to Bodie this weekend. There are some great ones up there.

Enough of the idle chit chat....it's time for some Photos:p
I was trying to make a good photo of the historic Customs House which is right next to the Brisbane River when I discovered this beautiful Porphyry Rock seawall. These two windows open into the foundations of the building. God knows what they would store in there, because it would flood regularly. The water level is about 30 cms below where the photo ends!

This is the leadlight window in our front door. I Photoshopped it using a filter (is that allowed?) It was Filter>Artistic>Paintdaubs. I kinda liked it!

Meaty0 That wall is beautiful as is your leaded window. What was accomplished using the PS filters? Did it enhance the colors or change them? Would be nice to see the window in real life to compare. The colors are quite vivid and gorgeous.

Did mine last night as I walked around for 20 minutes while awaiting my usual Friday night take-away curry. Not very interesting but it's the playing that counts ;-)
First shot ... born and bred Birmingham people are known as brummies. They have a very distinctive accent which can be a source of amusement for none-locals and comedians :-) Anyway, this shows the windows of 'brummiewood', named after Bollywood, in turn named after some other film-star place I can't remember. The architecture is 'interesting' to say the least. A curious, some might say careless and crass, amalgum of the old and the new(ish!)
Second is the crummy window of a local taxi company. I need to shoot it again as maybe there is some potential with it but I didn't capture it.

Condyk, mmmmm... take-away curry.... (I think it must be time for dinner, every post is making me hungry!) I really like the taxi window/door. Lots of character there.
Joyane, what a gorgeous church! I'll bet the wedding was beautiful!

Dave, I think the taxi door and window shot is great - It's good to see that they have some kind of insurance, but only if you pre-book!
I do think the architect who drew up the plans for the 'Brummiewood' building need shooting in public though :-)

As I mentioned the PPing was Filters>Artistic>Paint Daubs and the brush type was Dark Rough. This was followed by a healthy dose of Saturation which improves the appearance of the yukky artic glass. It's a great effect and I highly recommend it.:D

Glad you like it Kev, but I still feel something there isn't coming out. What I find sometimes is that a shot only really finds itself in post-processing ... and then only several weeks later. I find it's usually because I try to retain too much rather than look at the essence - less is more. Nothing to do with windows, but this is a very good example (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=208434) As Roger says, 'all the essential elements are there, the girl in the dress, the car and the action' while I think the original tries to pack in too much.
I just PP'd another window shot which I think is much better here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=1906776#post1906776) ... maybe that taxi company shot should really be a door shot ;-)
I picked up the Tokina 80-400mm II last week and then a SH 17-40mm on Friday and took the above test shots with it. It's one of my favourite L's. Just does what it needs to and it's a very consistent and predictable performer. A tad behind the 24-105mm IS ultimately perhaps, but very close. It's no better IQ wise than my Sigma 15-30mm EX, which is very underrated and might actually be better on distortion and contrast, but USM and smaller size are also very nice. Not sure which I'll keep; both were bought at great prices so I can't lose either way.
I like the bedroom treament shot Beth. Nice puffy pillows.

I nearly got a 17-40 but I felt it overlapped the 24-105 too much, and with my old 17-35 Sigma I found myself not bothering to change lenses just to get a few extra 'mm', I just stepped back a bit instead :-), mind you, I never thought it was very good anyway, a bit soft and the colours all wrong (too warm).
I decided to buy the Canon 10-22 in the end, (The Sigma 10-20 IQ was too inconsistent from what I was reading) and I now find myself using it more [like here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=208262)] than I ever did the Sigma.
I know what you mean about coming back to an image afterwards, I find myseld re-working images I took last year sometimes and getting much better results, maybe my PS skills are getting better, but I think my eye is being trained a bit better as well.

condyk I like your window shot too. Not so much the window but the door has me fascinated. It's certainly seen some use in its lifetime; in fact, I think it may have been an "internal" door originally. Hope we see it featured in your shots again soon.
Kevin_c Thanks mate! The porphyry stone is amazing stuff and was used in Brisbane's early days as a kerb and gutter stone mostly until recently, when its decorative properties were discovered :-( Now we have concrete gutters...yuk!

Thought I'd join in this weekend...
Took these on Friday evening round a friends house.
It's an old church window she managed to buy from a salvage yard (at great expense!) and made a feature of in the garden.
Took these both at ISO 800 so excuse the noise :-)
Both taken on the 24-105L IS handheld at 1/8th sec @f/4!

Here are my contributions for this week.
This is a window at an old house in town. I like that even though the outside looks a little rough, they have hung pretty curtains on the inside.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m114/BeccaNH/POTN%20Challenges/Windows1.jpg
This is the window ledge in my living room. I pick up rocks, shells, coral and trinkets whenever I go somewhere and they all end up on the window ledge.

I just couldn't come up with much for this one and didn't have a whole lot of time, so mine aren't too spectacular.
First, the window of the store where I buy food for Ashley and the two brats (fortunately I already have enough, since they're closed right now).
http://www.ldphotography.net/cdpf/window1.jpg
And the filthy rear window of my car. After driving about 100 miles on unpaved roads last week, she really needs to be washed again.

I will back in a bit to comment on everyone's contributions (some GREAT ones here!)
Mine:
#1 is the new glass block window that we put in my workshop. It wasn't quite interesting enough on it's own, so my youngest boy volunteered to add to the asthetics of it. ;)
#2 It has been said that the 'eyes are the windows to the soul'. I truly believe this. You can tell alot about a person from their eyes.

27th of August 2006 (Sun), 16:31
Giles I really appreciate the architechture both your shots reveal.
Condyke Thanks for the lesson on Brummies and I have to agree, it is the door that draws attention in #2
Joayne Both beautiful windows, in a moment you'll see I too am drawn to stain/lead glass windows
Beth Very artistic set up
Lightstream I like the mood even if you didn't quite get the shot you were after and gorgeous sunset. I miss being near the water to see sunsets like that.
Kevin The extra $$$ made a lovely yard decoration I love both captures but the reflection is my favorite.
Tommy Nice catch, you might have to turn in the evidence.
BeccaNH Nice shots, both of them. Don't you love those nice wide window sills?
Lonnie Cute pet store, they would get my business. My car has seen dust like that too, I'm afraid.
Cat #1 is so special in so many ways. #2 I actually thought about this same interpretation, you captured it much better than what I had in my mind's eye.
So here we are:
#1 is at our church. We actually had it refurbished and moved from our old building 2 years ago. It was the #1 thing we all said had to come with us when we built a new building, it was also the first window I thought of when this week's theme was being discussed:
http://performancephoto.us/images/Beckysgallery/CRW_5983.jpg
#2 was one of the selling points for our house. It is in our living room. Many of the houses in our town built during this time have windows similar to this:

I almost didn't get out this weekend. Finally, today, I had some free time. Then it started raining. Luckily for me it stopped for about an hour, and I was able to drive to a window I remembered seeing. As soon as I got there, the rain started again. But it wasn't seroius rain -- just a drop here & there. So I grabbed this shot & ran. Then the rain started again.

MeatyO: I love the colors of the bricks in direct contrast to the black iron (?) of the windows. The compostition is great...and I also wonder what would be kept in there. (the thought of it being prisoners gave me a chuckle though. ;) )
Your second shot of the stained glass is beautiful. The PP is fabulous..great color. Love it.
Giles: I really like your 2nd shot. The 'modern' windows nestled in between the older (and definitely more artistic) windows. Just plain weird if you ask me..LOL. But it does make for a great picture, eh? :)
Condyk: Thanks for the history lesson on Brummies. :p I didnt know that. (and I think you are referring to DollyWood, which in turn is a take on Hollywood.)
I have to agree with all replies here, and say that the DOOR in your 2nd shot is fabulous. It has such character, and you captured it well.
Joayne: Beautiful entrance to the church. I bet that window is gorgeous from the inside as well. How was your first wedding?? Congratulations.
Very neat capture in your 2nd shot. The lighting is beautiful; and thank you for the story about St. Chad.
Beth: I absolutely LOVE your shot. Well done, with perfect PP. If I saw that in an art gallery, it would keep me captivated for a long time.
Lightstream: Not far off topic at all..spot on! ;) These windows are beautiful with the sun reflecting on them. Gorgeous sunset, well captured.
Kevin: I really like the colors in your pictures. That is an awesome addition to any garden, I would love to have something like that. The reflection in the water is beautiful. Well done!
Tommy: great commentary. ;) I like that you can see the rain...can almost feel it.
Becca: I love the character of the window in your 1st shot. It's a bit insightful to mankind as well.... sometimes, You have to look past the peeling paint to see the pretty curtains on the inside. ;) I like that.
I have always wanted a large windowsill. You use yours well. :) Nice treasures.
Lonnie: LOL...that's what the windows at our pet store look like as well. Can't possibly appeal to our pets, so they must do that to attract us humans ;). It works, obviously, LOL.
I'm liking the dirty car. It is evidence of a really great trip. We rate the success of our outings by how dirty the truck gets. :) :)
Becky: That first window is breathtaking!! I can see why it moved with you to the new church. And you did a fabulous job of capturing it's beauty. WOW. And I mean that...WOW!
I like your second shot as well....you like stained glass?? ;) I have a good friend here that is a stained glass artist..some really gorgeous work. Your window is beautiful.
Styrofil: I really really like your photo! The windows reflected in a window makes for a fantabulous shot!! Well done. Love it. The lines and angles, the reflection...all of it. Love it.
Barbara: Nice contrast with the red barn and the green tree. The colors are so vivid after (during) rain, aren't they? I like your choice in windows...but then, I'm kind of particular to old barns. ;)
Well done everyone. I liked this theme alot. It was one of those weekends when I wish we could have posted more than 2 ;) A lot of different views of the same word. I love the variety.

Went down to Old Montreal Saturday to see the Public Market and came across these windows.
The first is a part of the Mother House in Montreal and is a reproduction of the original Letters of Patent issued by Louis IV April 15-1694, for the establishment of Hopital Ville Marie.
It is a part of a 3 window display.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b313/SRT101/IMG_3386.jpg
The second represents the Gray Nuns whose Mother House was situated here until it moved to it's present location. They were founded in 1738 and worked in the Hospital.

I do think the golf cart window should count, atleast a little. and a small reminder that the themes are open for interpretation.. any and all interpretation is acceptable, including mine.. hehe... but, here's my last window shot taken out at my roomates clubhouse.. she so far has been wise enough to not ask me what the heck I'm shooting even though she's seen me stand on chairs, lie on my tummy, and pull off to the side of the road...

LOL.. yeah, somebody asked to see a picture of the golf cart I was wandering around in so I just threw that in there.. I have one more pic of 'windows' that i'm going to be posting shortly..
sari
Hmmm..... I'm thinking the idea was to get a shot of you AND the cart! :)

sari: ooops, sorry, i should have been more clear. the comment was not for your golf cart but lightstream's pic. looking closer at his pic, there is a window on the boat. however, the focus or main subject of the pic seems to be the sunset instead of windows.

cat: i almost used the same analogy that "the eyes are the windows to the soul" but i knew someone will think of it and will interpret it better than i can.

The second picture was just an overview of what the scene looked like, the setting in which I was trying to take the first. I can pull it...

No No No!! Don't pull it. It is fabulous and a BEAUTIFUL shot. I think it is perfect just how it is, and a great contribution to this week's theme.
You captured the sunset in the windows of the boats, and I love it.
The point of this photoday is to get people out shooting, and to see what different interpretations we get of the same theme. That's what makes it fun.
Your windows are awesome, and you should leave them. :)

Few more comments:
Styrophil I love the reflection you captured, quite artsy.
Barbara Love to see captures of old barns, the window frame being skewed adds a touch of whimsy.
75D Thanks for the history, are those windows all etched?
Blackviolet Mickey is fabulous and I love how well you caught the reflection of the city
Sari That light in the window is fantastic, nice window capture for the golf cart request too, all in keeping with the theme.:D
Alex Interesting percpective with the glass blocks and brick. Sky window is cool too with the lantern. But you confused me when you mentioned Wednesday???
Sari Cool capture of the window grid on the tree, looks like a beautiful tree, too.
Lightstream Please don't pull your photos, nothing wrong with illustrating your story on what you were trying to capture. And they are gorgeous pictures even if they weren't quite what you were going for. Isn't that how we keep on learning?

becky: sorry for the confusion. i'm confused myself these days. that's why i don't banter too much on the other threads. i guess what i was saying was we go this place on wednesdays. so i went back on the weekend to take it since i did not have my camera with me. that's what i did not mention!

Great work folks, with all these entries it shows we're on to a good thing.
It sure was a great subject and think all the interpretations made for interesting viewing.
Don't see anything wrong with the Golf Cart, Sari, it fits the definition of a window.
Barbara love the barn, hope I see a few when I'm down in Vermont for a week's vacation starting the 9th.
Lightstream: Great shots don't pull them, Sun reflecting off the Windows fits the bill.
BeckyN: Yes they are etched on metal strips. Didn't notice till I got home that one of them was badly out of focus so I will have to go back and shoot it again and I will post all three of them.
Hey a long weekend's coming, would it be too much of a stretch to say that the theme might revolve around Labour?

There are a lot of great shots in this collection. I think my favorite would have to be Beth's bedroom window. I really like the post processing on that one, and I'm usually not a big fan of B&W.

LOL.. I've said it once i'll say it again. I very, very literally do not own or have in my posession a photograph of myself.. nope. not one. Unless you count my drivers license which I am absolutely not going to post online..
as to next weeks theme it seems almost too vague and I don't know about the idea of making a theme that is centered around one or two countries holidays but doesn't extend to the rest of the world.. England and Australia for example don't have a labour day weekend and there seasons aren't the same as ours so their not even in the late summer.. any other ideas?..

people at work sounds like fun...tho it does happen over a weekend so I guess 'work' is a flexible term.
It rained here Thurs-Monday so I'm hoping this weekend will be better for my participation I HATE shooting indoors.

Never thought I'd say it but work sounds good
Doubt my coworkers would enjoy pictures being taken of them... it's usually "put the damn camera down!" :D Besides, we are not a tremendously exciting lot.

Agreed. Otherwise it's a weekend of pointing long lenses at Saturday jobbers. Unless you're going to some sporting event of course. :)

I am planning on going to the beach for the weekend as well. The latest hurricane may have me thinking otherwise, but I believe someone will be working this weekend, somewhere. Should be interesting.

Wow, that phone looks sofistkatud! I haven't opened a phone box door in 20 years. Looks like it'll do e-mail, surf and even tell people not to use the booth as a urinal!
