View Full Version : Is this normal, or am I just crazy?

When sitting in front of my computer, something I do way to many hours a day, I might suddenly pick up my 10D, turn it on, remove the lens-cap, point it at the lamp in the roof ~ 2m away, half-press the shutter to make it focus. Point it at the monitor 0.5m in front of me, half-press the shutter to make it refocus, and so on.. Back and forth. Just enjoying the small noise from the USM-motor, and put a big grin on my face when it time after time refocuses withing tenth of seconds =)

Should I consider seeing a shrink, or am I not the only one? :-P

ROOFLE! You are truly addicted. Seek therapy quickly!

Actually when I first got my D60, I used to leave here on my computer desk just so I could look at it. Now they pretty much stay in their respective bags.

I don't have a bag for mine, so it floats around the desk, bed (next to desk), floor or wherever, as long as it's in reach if I need to take out the CF-card and put it in the reader :)

But yeah, I might look into therapy =)

Nope. That's perfectly normal. For variety, you might want to put it in full 'auto' mode, point it into a dark corner, and watch the flash pop up. That's another very comforting pastime.

Another of my favorites is the little 'click' you hear when you put a lens on the camera and it locks into positions.

You're a 100% absolutely normal 10D owner. (and quite typical, I might add.)

Yup, perfectly normal activity. Nothing to fret about. Give yourself another month or two and you'll find other activities with the 10D to keep yourself occupied, such as focusing on the computer screen with the camera set to AI Servo and then rocking yourself back and forth slowly to see if the the focus tracking on the camera really works. Or turning down the lights in the room and popping out the internal flash and then half-pressing the shutter button just so you can hear the crackling sound made by the flash as it emits a series of highspeed burst of light for focus assist.

Now, if you find yourself looking at the 10D laying on the table and, for one reason or another, it just doesn't look right and you have to move or nudge it a tad and then arrange the neck strap a few time before you are satisfied, then...well...you just might want to start thinking about seeing a shrink. That's a sure sign of depression caused by need-ta-get-out-en-shoot-a-pic-itis that usually hits people in the fall and winter seasons...sort of like a photographer's cabin fever. :D

Hehe, I do some possition corrections from time to time actually. Both on the cam itself and the neck-strap :-P When it's laying on my desk, the "DIGITAL" of course have to be visible so those Rebel-owners won't confuse it with an old film-cam. When it lies in the passanger-seat of my car, and I don't have a jacket or such to put over it, then the LCD-screen always face into the back of the seat, and the digital-part of the neck-strap is facing down :) Unless of course, I just jerk it under the seat :)

That's as pleasing a sound to a photographer as the cocking of a shotgun to a gun aficionado!

Actually,. I find it more analogous to slamming home a magazine topped off with Federal Hydrashock .45 ACP into a custom 1911! :D

I agree that the sound of the lens clicking into place is the best, I have no idea why except that I may feel that the lens is now safely on.

It must be a comfort thing, some people have blankets, we have 10d's and the wonderful clicking.

Incidentally, I have just had mine callibrated at Lehmanns in Stoke-on-Trent and it is wonderful now. The images are so much sharper, and 'in focus', what a bonus.

Must fly, off to see my therapist he wants to hear the clicking, in fact he is as excited as I am about it. Not much help there for me, but at least I am helping him ................

Hopefully when you get rudely awoken in the middle of the night by a burglar and you yell, "Freeze or I'll shoot!" you have the .45 in your hand instead of teh 10D. :D

I agree, that's normal behavior. I think I've got more pictures of my ceiling fan than all the other photos I've taken combined! ;-)

I like the shutter sound on my 10D, I especially like the radid 3fps burst sound. That's probably why I've taken over 6000 pics.

Try this:
Go somewhere interesting and take photos. I have had my camera for about 7 months, taking photos with it still puts a smile on my face.

My old camera was a digital P&S, I took about 2500 pics over 4 years, without the sound it just wasn't the same.

It is now coming up to summer here, yippee. Long days, lots of light, hopefully plenty of fine weather. I will start visiting the nearby islands including one that is a nature reserve. I am glad I don't pay per shot like with film.

I think that you're crazy, but that's normal.

I feel sorry for the people that aren't crazy, I am sure they get less enjoyment from life.

I take pics of a few pages of the local newspaper, and then, when I go take a dump, I bring the camera with me so I have something to read using a cool gadget!

vvizard
25th of November 2003 (Tue), 15:01
LOL! Reading the newspaper off the LCD.. Great one :) I would have opted for a SD-slot in addition to the CF-slot on the 10D though. Then I could snap the newspaper, load it into the PDA, and read the newspaper at the toilet on a "highres" screen.

But I too use cool gadgets on the toilet. I often find myself chatting at IRC from my PDA when taking a dump =)

Wait until you get more then one lens. Ooh! ooh!, even better wait until you get an IR filter and several lens.

My neighbors are begining to wonder at why I spend so much time in the front lawn with my camera on a tripod with a little cable dangling from it and this big white lens all pointed at this little tiny flower in my front yard. I seem to be very exicted and then I suddenly swear because I forgot to focus BEFORE I put on the IR filter. definately crazy behavior if I ever saw one.

And then I change lenses and repeat the entire sequence. And then about 3 other lenses follow.
And somewhere in the process I curse the CF card for running out before I was ready.

And I do this every time I get a new lens (about once per quarter this past year)

I must be a crazy to take pictures of little flowers in the yard with a huge 100-400 lens. Who needs macro? 8)

At least the neighbors don't get to see me stare for hours trying to decide which picture of two taken within 0.4 seconds of each other is better.

Real fun is trying to SEE the 50/1.4 focus. I played with my camera for hours after I got that lens. I could see it change, but not see it go into focus, that was way cool.

But I am jaded now and play with the IS on the 70-200/2.8 on, off, on, off..........

:) :) :) Me Like 10D :p :p :p

Just for the curious (not an IR):

Cool gadgets in the toilet? Well, you ain't seen not'n yet until you've sat on one of those high-tech, computer controlled toilet bowls that they sell in Japan. It comes complete with temperature controlled warm-water wash and gentle blower dryer. :D

But we digress. Now, what were we talking about?

vvizard
25th of November 2003 (Tue), 17:18
We where talking about if I should see a shrink or not =) But I don't think I will after reading this thread =) If I do then, I'll just let the shrink listen to my mirrorslap, and he will understand my problem, and tell me I'm healthy anyway =) The mirrorslap is great :) My old cam had the option to "emulate" a mirrorslap by emitting a *SPRACKLE* in the speaker each time I took a shot =) (Minolta DiMage 7i). So if you're on a budget, and really wan't the sound of a mirrorslap more than great pictures, get that one instead =)

Another cool thing to do is set the DRIVE to multiple pics, and the focus to SERVO, then go tell someone to run past you as you snap a quick 10 pics while following them. Wait for all the pics to store to your card, and then hit the PLAY button and move the jog dial forward and watch the action sequence on the LCD screen.

WARNING: Do this only if you are EXTREMELY BORED.

Eureka! That's IT!!!!

Ever since I bought the 10D I've been wacking my brains out trying to figure out what's different about shooting with it compared to my film SLR. I knew there was something different but I just couldn't place my finger on it. Yes, it doesn't use film and you get instant gratification with the 10D LCD but it was something a little more subtle.

Now it's finally dawned on me what it is, thanks to vvizard and cds. What is different is that it doesn't make that "kzzzz" motor winder sound! And I kind of liked hearing that sound everytime I took a picture. And now that I've figured it out excuse me while I go off to start up another thread. I'm going to start up a petition to have Canon include a simulated motor winding sound on the 10D controlled via the CF function menu. If the pointie-shootie digicams can have their mirror-slap sound, why can't the 10D have a motor-winding sound? Fair's fair, I say! :D

Hey, good idea, Ian. I've been caught with my pants down at times because my shot count was down to 0 and I didn't realize it until I tried to take a picture and nothing happened. :D

Cameras and I now sleep in garage.

You came off it better than me though. I said: Honey, I think I'm gonna take ~ $2000 (before lenses) from my low-paid partime food-store job (yeah, still a student), and throw it into a 10D.. It's a great cam. What do you think?

Even if we're still very young, and don't even live together, she thought that was one heck of a crazy, stoopid, foolish, imature, idiotic idea. So I did. And now I'm on the lookout for a new girlfriend actually :-P I don't think this was the reason for it happening though, but it happened at the same time, and I'm definetly sure this was what put in the last nail in my coffin :-P

But on the bright side, I'm still young, there's plenty of fish, blahblahbla, and now soon, some red-striped lenses on what I save by not having to buy her dinners, etc =)

I miss her though :/

It's good you found out how unreasonable she was before you made a terrible mistake and married her. Then, you'd end up in the garage like me.

Actually, though, life in the garage isn't too terrible. Every couple days the cat comes out to visit, and I've gotten used to the smell of decaying grass on the lawnmower. On cold nights, I take the cover off the car and wrap myself in it.

Most important, I can fondle the camera whenever I wish without being subjected to fits of jealous rage from 'the other half.'

Life ain't all bad.

So what's the temperature in your garage? Have you been able to verify if the 10D works great below the freezing-point yet? :)

Belmondo

Nope. Haven't been able to check that yet.

The problem is, at my age, I don't work below freezing. I'm sure the camera would be just fine, however.
