Point a TV or similar infrared remote at the camera and take a non-flash pic in a dim room. If you can see a bright spot made made by the remotes infra-red source then the answer is a qualified yes. You'll find loads of stuff in this and other forums about how to actually take infrared shots. You will need the required add-ons to hold an infrared filter though.

The answer is yes, the a80 has no Ir reduction...
But it's hard to find an Ir filter and adapt it to the camera...

I thought certain camera's had a built in setting for infrared...I didn't know you needed a filter(even though that makes much more sense)
Would any general photography store carry them?

You may want to try http://www.lensmateonline.com/buy.html
they have lenses for the G series, and may be able to help point you in the right direction.
B&H may give you some help as well.
Good luck.

Most digital cameras come with a 'hot filter' which reduces the amount of IR hitting the CCD. The A series do not reduce it all to nothing, some IR does get through. Enough light remains to take IR shots with a suitable IR pass filter.
Most small stores may not carry the filters, but most large photography stores will carry at least one brand. You may need to special order.
Some models do have an IR setting, though I think this is usually locked for long exposure (useless at daytime without ND filters.)
