Hi i am new here so be gentle with the comments :))))
This is my first shot concert Rancid 8-24-06 NYC. Suprisingly i had no press credentials. Just called and said camera was OK.. So after getting abused in the pitts, I come back with a few pics.
Camera: 5d with 70-200 IS all shots shot at 1/100 f 2.8 iso 3200 .. it was not easy!!

Nice shots! I would never imagined 2.8 being enough light, but I guess paring it up with 3200 worked out well, and of course the 5D ;)
Any noise reduction used?
BTW, let me be the first to say: WELCOME to POTN!
You crazy, taking a 5D into the pits!

Very nice images. First three are the best.
Looks like a mellow show though?
Edit; I didn't see the first image, so make that 'first three concert images are the best'

RANCID!!
I'm a fan :).
These are really awesome shots of the band. Number four is my favorite. I like how you composed that one.
You are insane for taking the 5D into the pits. I don't even like wearing new jeans in the pits.

Haha I remember Rancid from the late 90's. Yeah nice pics. DOF is pretty good. Well done.

50mm f/1.8 (for about $75) or f/1.4 (for a few bucks more) is a sound investment, or better yet the newly announced 50mm f/1.2L. Then 85mm f/1.8 (the f/1.2L does not autofocus fast enough.) Then the fast lenses start getting expensive. I ordered a 400mm f/2.8L IS from B&H yesterday that will mount on a Wimberley/Gitzo setup to shoot bands ... $6,657.90 delivered! I still cannot catch my breath that I spent that much on one lens, sigh.

I am sure I will be posting! I just checked and it hasn't left B&H yet, sigh.

Bruce WIllis actually toured with his own band for a while, and released the album "Return Of Bruno" in 1986. I've seen his band live, and they're a Helluva' blues outfit...

I like your new and first time shots. I guess you could say the first thousand shots will be your first shots. How many photos did you end up with total for the night? I usually take 75 to 210 per event. I move around though. I guess the city (NYC) venues are cramped.
close up mine best have been with a Canon 50mm 1.4. I hear from above that 50mm 1.2 L is arriving. That's cool. I liked the results of wide angle zoom lenses too. USM is good for prompt set up and shoot. 2.8 is close to the limit, without flash for me. 4.0 with IS.
28-135 3.5-5.6 IS Wide Angle TeleZoom works OK, the IS is taking me time to adjust to. I like to take a lot of bursts to get the smiles and the open eyes. I pick and choose later. Are you a local from NYC schools? Did you take a lot of art classes? Cause your pics show it.

I have close to 200 shots. Shot with a 4 gig card using raw. Thanks for the comments. Yeah the 50mm 1.2 sounds great dunno if its an option for me now $$$$$$$ :)
I am a local from new york been here practically all my life. I guess you can say that I have a small art background. I did graphic design for a few years and I'm a media studies major/film minor. So I have taken numerous art classes and in media they're always stressing composition etc. Athlough with these pics i was trying to capture some emotion. I was fortunate to be able to get so close even though people were banging into me and allowed to shoot the ENTIRE show. I know staff photogs get like 3 songs.

I could tell a NY'er.....I've been shooting at Penn's Peak in the Pocono's of NE PA. It's a small venue, comparable to small casino concert halls in Nevada. Started earlier this year with a 35mm Canon SLR...Now I use a 30D. Penn's Peak has gotten tough on cameras. I live nearby so every show is on mine agenda. No flash is usually the rule...No pro looking cameras, no extended lenses, they say at the door. Check out last weeks post of mine pics at:
http://www.southsidejohnny.com/
click on photos. There are 15 posted. Wish you luck...I'm concerned that mine days are numbered, cause I am out of mine seat much of the time and security has complained about me to management. All mine work is free, complimentary.....I buy mine own tickets...I aced art right through all school classes in NYC and beyond. Good Luck. Post some more....John

These turned out great, I'd never have guessed ISO 3200 from the results. Good sharpness, color, and framing.
