In my limited experience red eye is never going to go away for small cameras. It can be reduced and even eliminated using the following techniques however (but they are not always possible)

1. Increase room lighting.
2. Increase subject distance.
3. Don't use the zoom.
4. Decrease aperture (possible on s30?)
4. Get an external flash.
5. Post process the red-eye out - I prefer PSP 8 for this, greate red eye removal tool.
6. Buy a bigger camera :-)

some people are exceptionally prone to Red eye.

i have a friend who suffers from it..no matter even if she 9s looking away..still gets red eye.

easy solution, edit it out in your software.

Every eye has a chance to reflect light back out, thus providing 'red eye'. No matter what the PR, there has never been an all out cure for red-eye other than blind folds, eye-patches or someother method of hiding peoples eyes (no light in, no light out).

Some people are more prone to red eye than others.

There is however a safe 'operating distance' where you are 'unlikely' to have red-eye in your photos. To calculate your safe distance, measure the middle of the objective lens, to the middle of the flash (don't measure the front to back distance, just the light paths diffence)

Now, for each inch, you have approximately 2 feet of no red eye distance. So a camera that has 2.5 inches between flash and lens centers, you can shoot 5 feet and closer without worry. Beyond that, and follow stduc's tips.
