A few of my keepers from first time shooting hockey with the 70-200 (first time in the wild with it altogether actually).

Had to crop some shots a bit as the lens is just not long enough to reach end to end or even from one side to the other and fill the frame. I'm still very reliant on aciton coming to me, rather than being able to follow with the lens. This does require a bit of game analysis to work out where the best place to stand is going to be.

Also, WB looks a bit off but it could just be due to the odd green colour of the water-turf.

C+C welcome

not a fan of #1 with back to the camera, good focus and color/
#2 is a great capture of the action, could be cropped even tighter if possible/
#3 is best frame but color is way off compared to the others. To yellow.

Did you shoot RAW? Really helps when having white balance issues. Good shots for first time out, with time you will learn to anticipate where the action is going. Practice does help, keep posting your results.

I'm new at this, but I disagree. I like #1, I think it has a certain feeling to it. it shows the intensity, and kind of gives you the POV of the player.

Thanks heaps guys

Number three is a different colour because it was a different turf, and a bit later in the afternoon. I did try adding a bit of blue but it made it look altered.

BikeMike: that's why I like #1 too :)

I really enjoy shooting field hockey... and these pics have certainly increased my anticipation for the new season in the UK.

#2 works best for me... although I'd be tempted to crop in a wee bit tighter.

In this case I would have changed to f11 or higher and not blured out what the player was looking at.
As for the last shot being later in the day, did you change your white balance?
