i've been on the canon site and found it to be somewhat informative. i was looking at the picture style and came across 3 more setting for the picture style that is available for download onto the DPP or to the camera itself.

http://photoworkshop.com/canon/picturestyle/file/howto-01.html

i know it only show it for the MarkII and for the 5D... but does that mean the 30D will also take the version for the 5D, since they share the same picture styles?

has anyone tried it yet? or is pictures style something you just avoid? ;)

It's been around for some time. I've loaded the Clear, Emerald, and Twilight PictureStyles on my 30D. Clear is a bit too strong for me in most situations (although it did come in handy one time when I was shooting from an airplane). Emerald I use frequently at the beach. Twilight doesn't see too much use... It's kind of like using fluorescnt WB outdoors, but to a lesser extent.
You can get the files here:

I found it better to shoot RAW and then apply picture styles during PP and see which one you like best. I think doing it in camera with just jpg its more difficult because the picture style gets inbedded in the jpg and can't change it as opposed to the RAW you can try which one you like best then apply it.

Surely the thing to do is develop your own "style"

I agree. I think it's a gimmick by Canon to appeal to JPEG shooters who dislike post processing.

i just had a look at Clear the BIRD shot and to me thats how the shot should be in the first place with no processing SO canon can give a sharper looking image if they really want too Yet the AA filter is said to be the problem as to why we need to process among other reasons .
i hope the next 1 series gives jpegs choices like this after all we will still have raw for when we want to bring out that bit extra.

oh i agree it's best to develope a style of my own.. but the picture style being there is like a itch waiting to be scratched. i'm shooting raw and sometimes i just wonder is there any point to just use the picture style? or should one just leave it at standard and fire away then pp later?

gyrob.. haha.. u hit it right on the nail. yup.. i wished that what canon should've done in the first place. but then again.. it's only wishful thinking that they try to make it as perfect as possible. if they didn't do that.. then maybe one will be so satisfied with the 30D or whichever one they have and never wanna upgrade.. haha

Can you please explain what you mean by: "apply styles during PP"?

How do you do that?

Thanks.

I for one am loving this gimmick. Especially "landscape" is great and i use it extensively.

There's hardly any image that couldn't use a bit of tweaking, but using styles i find i can stay in the rawconverter and only use PS for things like stamping and rotating.

Saves me a lot of time in PP so i am a fan - each to his own i guess.

yeah but not everyone wants to have their images sharpened completely, or even at all! My stock agency won't accept images that have been sharpene... plus giving you control of sharpening in PP allows you to sharpen according to output size, something that couldn't really be done in camera

aa filter is given as the reason to apply sharpening at some point. not necessarily in pp, hence why JPEG users can select level of sharpening to be applied in the parameters menu.

Thanks.DPP, for instance, allows you to select a "Style" (other than the one you shot with) and apply it to your RAW file while doing the conversion process.

Thanks Rui for showing the new picture styles. I haven't seen it until now.

I enjoy picture styles. It reduces my post-processing and I find shooting JPG more.

can this be done if you are using Adobe Camera Raw?

no, i don't think so.. becuase the picture style is only applied either from the camera or from using the DPP, since picture style is from canon.

(if i'm wrong plz correct me. thanks)

BreezeBrowser Pro is another that provides selection of styles during raw conversion, including in preview mode for taste-it-and-see.

Didnt see anyone mention the picture style NOSTALGIA. Besides the ones listed above, you can also download NOSTALGIA from this link:

is it just me or does it seem like you can only load up to 3 user define, when the site gives you 4 styles: nostalgia, clear, emerald, twlight.

anyone have a run down on their setting for each styles? anyone care to share some of the settings (sharpness, contrast, saturation, color tone) that you've found to work great in certain situations?

I was wondering the same thing, before I down load any of them. Anyone have an answer?

When you install the picture style to you camera, all you're doing is setting the selected picture style parameter settings to one of the three user defined settings in the camera. So there really is no need to delete those picture styles if you don't like them. You can either overlay it with another picture styles or set them back to their default settings which, I believe, is Standard.
