I shot my first real indoor event on Thursday .. sketches by teenagers on stage... and after going the night before to try and get the right settings etc..after much worrying I have to say I am amazingly happy with my results (for me anyways)

But as always.. can I improve and one thought crossed my mind.. To get more light in would it be better to NOT use a lens hood if shooting indoors... for example a play where your in the dark and the light is on stage.. I would ahve tried had it crossed my mind at the time..

I ahave searched this part of the forum for Hood and couldn't find any answers.. I should add. lens hoods already on camera in bag so wasn't a concious decision either way at time :)

Hi Kipax...

A lens hood is (primarily) designed to reduce lens flare. So the use of a hood when shooting indoors is certainly advisable, particularly in the setting you mention: Stage lights could certainly cause flare in your images.

The use of a lens hood will not make any difference to your exposure settings.

Hope that's helpful.

Gavin is completely right!

I have some indoor shots that were ruined from lens flare...all my lenses have hoods on them when shooting at all times now!

Always have my lens hoods on lens. Not only for flare protection, but also for lens protection! They get pretty beat up.

Another thought on shooting under stage type lighting: I shoot boxing from time to time and I find that removing the UV filters from my lenses makes for a small (but worthwhile) improvement in image contrast.

Right.. I thought more light needed and no lens hood would help.. Unlike other shooting it's not possible to do as much testing as my next job is in a month to do a full blown play.

BTW I got iso 800 at 2.8 and 125-200ss with 200 being a little darker but for when they where jumping about. All my backgrounds are jet black and only the subjects showing up which is an accidental but I think brill effect. I coucldn't get any better with the 50/1.8 .. they looked better but still only iso 800

I shot from back of room with 1dmkII and sigma 70-200..
