Hello friends,

Any idea on how to get the 30d to leave the shutter open for more than 30 secs? Perhaps the canon utility? I don't want to spend any money on a remote control if I don't have to.

Rian

remote or remote capture from teh computer is neccessary, no way to do it in camera.

you should do doing it with a remote regardless, to avoide camera shake

never done it that way, but with a remote, you press the shutter and hold it, or lock it until you're ready to end it, and you release it, it may be the same way, you don't enter a value for it but keep it depressed.

Just buy one of these, it worked great with my 20D and now with my 30D and it's quite a bit less expensive than the Canon one:

I agree with Lani Kai. I bought one of those for my 20D and it works perfectly fine. Cheap and effective. :)

in the bulb mode, you need to press the shutter button, it'll open the shutter button as long as you press (and close once you release the press button), thats why a lot of people here using cable (avoid the shaking)

I really appreciate all the help... but with my 30d bulb mode still only lets me shoot for a max of 30 secs. is there or is there not a way to get around this?

well a remote will, but thats not the issue

did you try firing it in bulb mode from the laptop? you may have to keep it depressed, I'm not sure. Try reading the help topic for it in the program.

good link, but for the wrong camera, it uses a different remote unfortunetly. There is a DIY link out there, but the hard park is getting a plug to work and fit right.

on the last one, the writter said, if you like to do long exposure, you may change the switch for the other one (that's what i did, so you dont need to press for long time)

Well, I just took out my hands free unit and it fits in my friends 350d he has here.. but asal the 30d uses some other connector. Thus, I am going to need to buy a $150 remote or figure out how to get this to work with my laptop.

you can buy the $7 ebay remote, the $50 canon remote or the $100 canon remote, all do the same thing, except the most expensive one has a timer in it. all will allow longer bulb exposures

Like you, I have found that EOS Capture does not support Bulb mode, and that there is no way to take >30 sec exposures using that program.

I use the less exspensive Canon remote and it works great. You can lock it down and leave your lens open all night if you want.

Like Coreypolis says: in bulb mode you press en hold down the shutter or lock
it down wit a cable relaese. If I'm not wrong the time is not limited to 30 sec in
bulb mode?

Good luck.

Edit: Just arrived home and tested the bulb mode on my 30D. I put the camera in M(anual) mode.
Turned the top wheel to bulb and pressed the shutter for 60 sec and relaesed it.
It's like everyone says. In bulb mode the shutter stays open as long as you press and hold down the shutter.

Apparently 30 sec. is max.

Though i haven't tried it yet.

Of course it does. That's not what Dr. Flynn was talking about. If you go back and read post #3 in this thread, you'll see that Dr. Flynn is referring to the EOS Capture program, which, as has already been pointed out, cannot be used to take >30 second exposures. I'm sure Dr. Flynn is aware that you can take longer expsores manually using the bulb mode.

Hey guys, well after a lot of frustration, it looks like you can only shoot longer that 30 secs in bulb mode and only in full manual. :) I am headed to ebay to buy myself one of those damn remotes. haha

quick question: evetybody is worried about long exposures, but: what is the limit of a battery for 350d/20d/30d when taking a long exposure?
can I use a 350d or 20d for exposures up to one hour? (i have grip and batteries for both)
are there any dangers to the senzor?

grig, it's sometimes considered a bit impolite to hijack somebody's thread by asking unrelated questions. Better to start a whole new thread of your own. That way people will see a thread title that relates to your question and will be more likely to read it and answer it.

It's also a good idea to use the forum search facility. If you had, you'd have found this thread: So what's your longest exposure on a DSLR? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=188963) with this quote:
When we were in Joshua Tree; we each had 6 batteries. In 4 days of shooting (Almost everything in sight  we only went through 2 batteries. We used the same battery for all 4 days; and used another battery for the nighttime exposures.

We put in a known full battery because we didn't want it to die in the middle of an exposure; but seriously; we had the shutter open for > 4 hours on 1 battery. The same bp511 that my G2 chews through to take 40 pictures (without LCD) can go for DAYS in my 20D :smile:Hope that helps.
