Hello all,
I am seriously considering selling a kidney and picking up the 1Ds. What I would like to know is what are your oppinions on how pragmatic it would be to purchase this model at this time. My thinking, when I'm not lusting after the 1Ds, is that it has been released for a relatively lengthy period and may be due for an upgrade. When I bought my D60, the D10 came out like the next month! I really don't want to repeat this experience. Anyway, I'd love to hear any input you might have. Thank you in advance.

Personally, FWIW, I don't see the 1Ds as being in line for an upgrade for another year or so. It's the pinnacle of dSLRs at this time, and IMO for some time to come. Kodak's 14n has got some serious problems and the Sigma's Foveon-based (megapixel inflated) cameras are a joke.
The 1Ds could very well, for most people, be the last digital camera they would ever need to buy. Personally, I see me using my D60 and 10D comfortably well into the next decade.
So, IMO -- again FWIW -- I would not hesitate getting a 1Ds.
Note: Let me know how that kidney-trade thing goes. I just may consider that if your's goes well. That 1Ds is one super-sweet machine. :)

I'd wait a bit to see what Canon does with their replacement for the 1D. The 1Ds is an amazing camera but it has a few things that I would expect to be designed out of the 1D relacement. (Lets call it the 2D for now).
The 1Ds has an ISO range up to 1250 and there is no autorotate for the images. While neither is the end of the world I have ISO 3200 and the autorotate on my 10D. I would expect the 2D to have both of these features.
Now there's every indication that the 2D will only be a 1.3 camera, not full framed like the 1Ds, but who knows for sure. There also could be a model revision of the 1Ds (1DsN?) that "fixes" these problems.
In any case I'd wait until the PMA to see what's up Canon's sleeve.

Dude,
It's not that serious it's only a camera and it can & always be replaced by something. The kidney can't be replace as easy :) I'm a techno junkie and it took me some $$$$ to realize I can't keep up with the market. The PMA is due here in Vegas sometime in March or April I'm sure Canon will be releasing something new I would wait. While hanging out @ one of the Wolfs camera shops here it was mentioned that the 10D will be discontinued soon but thats how rumers start. Nikon is releasing there new camera this month I'm sure Canon has a new one near by.

I figure my chances are just about as good of growing a new kidney as ever having enough disposable cash laying around to buy a 1Ds with.
Besides, as it stands, I seem to be using my kidneys to the limits of their potential.....something that could never happen with the 1Ds.
Guess I'll leave the situation static for the time being.
BTW....Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow to all the Yanks on this board. For everyone else, Happy Thanksgiving, too. You just won't have a clue what I'm talking about.

I d just get a 1D because they are really dropping in price. the camera blows away everything for seed and accuracy . It is amazing in low light situations. If you shoot in raw you get 12meg files when you convert. I would buy that and then wait to see what Canon has next because the price will most certianly drop. Look at the 10d as compared to the D30 D60 lower price more camera.
I just like the 1D

Well, since the discussion revolves around the possibility of selling off body parts to buy cameras, I can honestly say that the 1D doesn't offer enough advantage over my 10D to warrant giving up much more than my appendix. Unfortuantely, the appendix went several years ago along with the gall bladder, so I'm running dangerously low on spare/unnecessary components.
I might sell a leg, however. I don't suppose it'd be too bad going through life as a human monopod.

Happy Kidney, er Thanksgiving, Tom and all
Depends on what you would use it for (the 1Ds).
But even assuming a kidney could buy a 1Ds, I'd probably still keep the kidney, or at most put it down as collateral on a couple new lenses. If I was earning a living off the camera, I'd certainly be able to easier rationalize making that investment. Not sure of your situation.

He's got one kidney. One eye. His right arm has been removed at the elbow and the left leg was taken off at the knee.
But wow! He's got some cool camera stuff!! :)

So seriously, you can sell a kidney? How much can I get for one? =) What other good-paid ("non-necessary") body-parts do people buy? =)

Well the mortgage on the house was tough but the 1Ds and the 400MM 2.8 L IS just had to go in the new bag I got for Christmas last year... Tough choices......
Jump on it. you will never believe what the 1Ds can do until you get your hands on it.
Enjoy.

No I probably don't believe it. And with 1 year of photographic experience, even if buying one, I don't think I would have understood it anytime before it was rivaled by the IXUS ;) I've had my 10D for a month now, and (think I) start to get the hang on SLR-photography. I seriously doubt the 10D will become the limiting factor in my pictures for _MANY_ years ;)

Funny, but I bought a 300d just 1 week before having emergency surgery on my back.
That was just a little more than a month ago.
The 2 events will always be tied together, since it seemed similar to selling a body part for the camera.
And it was like a deal with the devil.
I finally had the camera I had lusted after for over a month, and I had full use of my leg again because of the surgery.
Then the payback!
In my hands the best (and most expensive) camera I had ever owned, 5 miles away a great air show. I imagined great pictures of fantastic flying machines! But the doctor says, no travel for six weeks!
In my hands the (yada-yada) camera and unrefundable tickets to a science fiction convention where William Shatner will appear. But the doctor says no travel for six weeks...
I have a hard drive with lots pictures of every leaf and lizard within my allowed walking distance of the front door.
So, if you decide to sell body parts for camera stuff, find out the length of the recovery time. :-)
