View Full Version : Will Canon answer to these?

1. Live preview LCD: on Olympus EVOLT E-330 DSLR
2. Macro IS Lens: on Nikon VR Macro lens
3. Built-in WiFi: on Nikon P&S (also Canon own IXUS P&S), or to save production-cost, just put it inside the battery-grip.
No.1 will lead to another subject: Is it a sin for DSLR shooter to using LCD preview?
So anybody know about this things? will Canon have any plan about it?
Cheers,
Lok

1. Live preview works so bad on E330 in A mode (small ccd in vf housing) and so clumsy in B mode (main sensor is used after mirror is up) that I would rather not see it in next 5 years than see it implemented in the same manner as in Oly.
2. Why would you put IS on lens that is by default used in working distances where IS isn't effective? Why would you make excellent lens worse by playing "monkey see, monkey do" with Noink.
3. Wi-Fi is so computer stuff... It isn't bad at all but there are some more photographic issues thet should be adressed (DR, interface, controls, battery life etc.) before putting things like tv's, wi-fi's and mp3's in cameras...
Using LCD for preview isn't sin. Sometimes it's more comfortable to use LCD, especially flip&twist one, then viewfinder. Concert, macro, strange angle shots would benefit from havin' live preview... And I bet that war photographers would praise possibility to shoot from cover :)

Another comment on WiFi,
Canon already has the optional WiFi capability. Good enough for now. Also easier to upgrade as tchnology changes.

I would like to see wi-fi included on the new 1-series bodies because it is 2006 and it doesn't seem like it will be too expensive to add...

wouldn't ever want options 1. You can't see focus correctly or really do any critical work with a live lcd, that a un neccessary expense
number 2 would be great for macro shooters I guess, for now you could use a normal IS lens with tubes.
wifi is available now for some, but inorder for Canon to put it into more, they need to drop the cost significatly and need to get a better system, the current one isn't all that great.
we'll see next spring what they do, they have a lot of other things I'd like to see first.

IS isn't effective when shooting macro. It's effectiveness grows by increasing distance to subject.

IS is effective anytime camera shake can blur the photo, regardless of distance.
If camera shake is not an issue for macro shooters, why do so many of them use tripods?

where did you hear that? That doesn't effect IS

Often, the bigger concern with macro photography is movement that results in moving the focus plane (in/out or towards/away from the subject). Depth of field at that close a distance is very shallow, even stopped down quite a ways. IS doesn't really work very effectively on this direction of movement.
Can't say that IS wouldn't help in macro, but I can say that the effectiveness is questionable in some circumstances.

Yeah, I really didn't think of that.

As a macro shooter, I can say that I don't think you would ever really need it in the field. With macro, you almost always shoot at a high aperture (like f/9) and with a high shutterspeed. Most of the time, you get nearly all of your light from the flash, which pulses between 1/15,000th and 1/50,000th of a second. That's fast enough to stop a bullet, and certainly fast enough to stop camera shake. In natural light macros, it would be a little more useful, but most serious macro is not done with natural light (unless you have a tripod, in which case you wouldn't need IS to start with).
IS would just make the already expensive macro lenses even more expensive. It would only really be useful when using the macro lens as a walk-around lens, but if it was really necessary then you would just buy an IS lens for walkaround and a macro lens for macro.
Just my $0.02

As long as you are building in WiFi, why not build in Pocket Wizard support?

Now that would be something worth having. A built in PW transmitter. Sure would make the wireless setup a bit cheaper. Or at least...less bulky! :)

If PW was in the 1D, it shoudl be the same tiny CF sized card that works in the sekonic meters.
So Drop the SD slot Canon, and give us DUAL CF card slots instead, only make one of them useable for both storage, or other options.. (PW, GPS etc.. ;) )

I would dearly love to have built in pocket wizard support. The pocket wizard system slowly seems to becoming the industry standard for wireless shooting. You can now buy many studio strobes with builtin receivers.

PW support would rock.
So when will we get a new thread with a rumor leaked about the next gen 1 series with built in PW? heh heh.

Never say never.
Live view is nice feature to have in some situations.

Canon already has WiFi built into the PowerShot SD430. This camera sells for under $500.
Why should I pay $1500 to add WiFi. It will only cost Canon a few dollars to add this into the Camera Body. All their SLRs should include WiFi 802.11G.

As long as I can turn it off off, great. I don;t want my images going out where anyone can get them. I trust encryption only for about 72 hours at most.

Just an idea to have slots and just add devices when needed like a computer.

WIFI would love this feature! The cost of the current unit seems very higher for what you get!
Option 1 + 2 i dont personally need! However longer battery is alway important!
