Hello everyone,
Got a 350d 2 weeks ago, shot my first high school football game last week (actually shot the band for the most part) with the kit 18-55mm lens, but just got the Sigma 70-300mm delivered today. I would like to try shooting some of the players on the field with it this Friday at the next game.

(Please keep in mind, when it rains, it pours, as I had to edit these on a laptop due to a desktop catastrophe.)
I'm doing this just for fun (and family), but am worried about using the 70-300 at night because of the light issue. The stadium is pretty well lit as far as high school stadiums go, but I shot all the photos linked at an iso of 1600. I feared the worst with noise, but it wasn't as big of an issue as I thought it would be. I can't afford any of the primo telephoto lenses at the moment, but now I'm thinking maybe I should've just saved up for one. That, or just stick with the band and move closer...
Any advice for a high-school-sport novice and lens choices?
(The local newspaper photographers showed up at the rival game last week with their gigantisaurus lenses and I felt very, very small as I stayed quietly behind the fence. )
