i am about to buy a new rebel xti and recently i found a 150x speed 1 gig card for 21.99 and a 2 gig for 42.99 on newegg.com which is incredibly cheap considering that extreme 3's are like 50 buck for a 1 gig they are call ritek silver edition but anyhow my friend said that a 2 gig card fails 4 times as often than a 1 gig card

as cheap as they have gotten I recommend going with the 2 gig extreme II.

I would buy two 1gig because if one card malfunctions, you still have the other working.

I usually also prefer to have more than one card, but I've found out that 1GB is not enough for my shooting habits, even if I had the same # of GB. 2GB is the right size for me (20D, everything RAW and small JPG).
So now I carry 2 cards of 2GB, 1 of 1GB and a FlashTrax 80GB in case I need it.

I've gone the multiple 1GB cards route, some of which are the ritek and for the price have been excellent cards, and with a life time warrantee on top of it. The rest of my cards are the Sandisk along with the Sandisk card reader.

I use 2x2gb and 1x1gb as backup, but would like a 4gb to cope with my sports burst when my 1D N arrives.

whatever size you get, get at least 2 cards.

I went ahead and got a 4GB card...
One thing i've had bad luck with in the past is bending pins in the compartment or moving cards in and out and then getting "CF Errors", but the was with 2 Fuji cameras so im not really sure about the pins in Canon cameras...
At least with the 4GB card, it stays in and never comes out :)

Hi,
I shoot a lot of motorcycle racing,
I have one 2 gig card (and another on order) and two 1 gig because I shoot 3 to 4 frames at a time and also if a card plays up i have't lost the lot.

Two cards of whatever size is essential or you are taking a risk. I've never had one fail and don't necessarily feel the very expensive ones are any more reliable, but they are easy to lose. I would rather have two cheap ones than one expensive one.

When it comes to CF cards, redundancy is very important, so get two or three cards. I use Ultra II's (1 & 2 gig sizes) because they are the best preforming card/dollar for the 20D. Having said that, the Extreme III's are coming down in price and therefore getting more attractive all the time!

I guess it willl depend on what you're shooting. If your doing sports and don't want to miss anything, then a larger capacity card would be better suited to you, if you're into Landscapes where the action is a little slower then maybe two smaller cards will fit the bill.
I carry 4 cards (2 GB, 1gb and 2 x 512) and use the one that best suits what I am shooting at the time.

I would buy two 1gig because if one card malfunctions, you still have the other working.
I suggest the same thing... at least you can still shoot with 2 cards if one malfunctions...
I went out and bought three 1 gig cards, then I bought a 4 gig card. almost imssible for all 4 cards to malfunction if i need one.

If you only have one memory card for your camera, I will guarantee this will happen:
You are downloading photo files to the computer using a card reader (because this is the best way to get files from a card to the computer). You get called away for something else. Now, you grab your camera bag to head out to shoot some more. Guess where your only memory card is - and you are now 20 miles from home when you discover the snafu.
Bottom line - have SEVERAL cards of 1GB or better capacity, and keep all but one in a little case in your camera bag.

With the 5D on a days outing I will carry two 2 gig cards. For a trip overseas I carry two 4gig, four 2gigs and a few 1gig plus an Epson P2000. At the end of the day I will delete unwanted images and copy to to Epson. I do not erase the any cards unless I run out. Just in case the Epson has a problem.
