Can anything be done to remove/lessen haze on long-distance shots? Recently I shot a but of pics on a very hazy day near the ocean, and the objects in the distance are almost completely obscured, of course.

Will a polarizer or UV filter help with this, and get those distant objects sharp(er)?

I don't think that a UV filter will help. The polarizer might possibly.

Just the other day, I was standing north of the SF Golden Gate Bridge, and I spotted the Farallon Islands out at sea. I swung my monster lens around and shot with 500mm. With that x1.6 factor of the D60, that would be about 800mm effectively.

Once in the computer, of course, it looked awfully hazy. I could refine it somewhat by increasing the contrast dramatically, but then color noise became a problem. Neat Image fixed a lot of the color noise, but it wasn't perfect.

i shoot alot from the roofs of tall buildings. i use mostly
300mm, it's real hazy in St. Louis. neither a UV, or a
circular polarizer are much help. i guess you must
learn to love the haze!

Yes You can within PS!

1) Filter/Sharpen/Unsharp Mask ...
Amount 10-30%
Radius 50 !!!! it's the "local-sharpen" trick
Treshold 0-3

or apply a S-curve

2) Image/Adjustment/Curves
set two additional points are right enough
(0,0) 60,50 196,202 (255,255)

apply a few times if not strong enough.

Both are great for Backlight too.

I've seen that also referred to as "Local Contrast Enhancement":
R=30-50pixexs
Amount= 10-30%
T=0
It works very well on cloudy days when everthing looks grey.

Thanks guys! I'm going to try that on a couple image and see if I can revive them.
