View Full Version : What would you buy with $100,000.00???

I'd start with a pair of 1Ds MkII bodies and a few L lenses (16-35 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8 IS, 300 f2.8 IS). I'd guess that would take care of at least $25,000.00.

So, what about you???

Mike

I'd get the 1200mm lens that runs just shy of $90,000

A ticket back to Kenya and a solid used Land Rover. I would start leading photo tours, this time for the rich and shameless. The backpackers are more fun, but don't have much money.

What would you buy with $100,000.00?

Invest it, or put a super down payment on another house. Oh, and a Twix candy bar.

Oh wow, I guess I'd pay off all of the debt I built up in college - student loans, credit cards, car payment. That would leave about $30,000, then I could convert over to my goal of an all full-frame and fast prime setup:

5D x2
24 1.4L
50 1.2L
85 1.2L
135 2.0L

(I'd keep using the 200 2.8L)

With the remaining 18 thou or so, I'd buy more advertising and album samples for my business and get a website built by a real web designer. Oh, also a brand new super duper Mac setup. And with the rest I'd go on a shopping spree at Waterloo Records.

The problem with the 1200mm is you put the 2x extender on it and you're down to f/11.

May choose something other than Twix.....but the intent is the same. Maybe buy a 5% CD and use the interest end of year 1 to buy some gear :)

Would I do with $ 100,000.00?? I would buy 5D Body and two Nice lens. Leftover money, I would buy super-sports bike and the Nice mobile house or mortgage house. ;)

TWIX RULES!!!!! you have great taste!

My "buy with $100K" list would be interesting because it would be what I would actually want to CARRY. If I wouldn't carry it, I wouldn't buy it. I would actually run two parallel overlapping lens systems depending on how heavy or light I wanted to travel.

EF-S System
-------------
400D (just cuz. :P)
EF-S 10-22 USM
EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM
EF-S 60mm macro
EF 70-300 IS USM

EF System
-----------
1D Mk2N
5D
16-35 f/2.8L
24-70 f/2.8L
24-105 f/4L (just because I can have both ;) )
70-200 f/2.8 IS USM L
100-400 IS USM L
300 f/4L and good teleconverter
35 f/1.4L
More CF than I can shake a stick at
Some kind of portable storage device. As backup.
Dell ultralight laptop, and I mean ULTRA light. With 120GB hard disk and 2GB of RAM.
Computrekker AW
Nice light carbon fiber tripod
Arca-Swiss B1 ballhead or Acratech UBH

And I'd spend the rest on a trip to Yellowstone and a 4WD. No Great White lenses for me, they would never leave home.

I did this once before when we sold our house in london. We travelled for two years including 14 months in Southern Africa. So, I'd pay off any debts I still have, and this time go to Aussie for six months or so, buy a used 4x4 and travel around. I'd probably buy a Bigma. Last thing I'd do would be blow it all on gear   I like A2Z's idea too.

Hmm, good idea. I might play with a TS if I have the funds. I was just thinking how a TS might fix some of my buildings 'leaning'.

NOOOOOOOOOOO, don't give me more ideas on how to spend $$!!

Edit: Cured self of TS-E lust: one look at the price tag and even the gear fetishist says no :p

I'd head to a travel agent to book 2 first class trips to New Zealand and take my mom on her dream trip. Then if anything was left over, I'd probably put it away for retirement.

Because I was bored the other day, I did a "dreamer's" shopping basket at Warehouse Express. It came out at 27k. The usual 1DS II and crop of Ls covering 14-600mm.

Realistically though, I'd set up a host of investment plans to try to pay for my kids' education.

You can get land that cheap where you live? :-)

Up here, $100K (CDN) get's you about 1/4 of a decent sized house on a 40 foot lot. The Oil boom sure has its downside when it comes to house prices :-|

$100,000 could get me 5-20 acres where I live depending on how hard you look and how far out you go. In other parts of the States you would be lucky to get piece of land big enough to put a trailer on.

I only paid $140,000 for my 1600 sq. ft. house on a 1/3 acre lot.

Yowza...not much of a lawn, Mike? Maybe I'm thinking wrong.

I think our "lots" in town here are something like .65 acres or something like that, and my house sits on 4 of them. don't know the sq footage, but it's about 21 rooms, 3 of which are huge.

Now...imagine that. My house, land and all, is worth about $300,000. Now. My uncle just bought a house out in CT, in Westchester county, and comparatively, I'd call it very very small and plain. Probably got 8-10 rooms at most. You wanna know what he paid? Almost $800,000.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why he doesn't live here. For a house like ours, he said he'd likely have to pay a million and a half out there. That's just plain insane.

Yowza...not much of a lawn, Mike? Maybe I'm thinking wrong.

1/3 acre is about 13,000 sq. ft. My lawn isn't huge but you could throw a football around. Enough room for the little one to run around with the dogs. I have a few trees and a couple of natural areas. My parents live on 3/4 acre and I have more lawn then they do. Lots of trees at their house. It is all in the layout.;)

My parents previous house in CA is the same size as my current house. 12 years ago it sold for around $220,000. 2 years ago my dad looked at property value in the area and it was around $600,000.

My wife's boss just built a new 15,000 sq. ft. mansion on 25+ acre farm land for around $2 million.
