What OS is your Mac running?

You can format it and if your using it only on a Mac it's a good idea as most flash drives are in DOS format for PC's, Mac will use it fine but if your only using it on Mac make it into Mac format is a good idea.

Just an outside chance:
if by "delete" you mean you drag/move the files into the Trash and then you unmount the card (such as by dragging its icon to the Trash), you might first need to explicitly select the command to empty the Trash before you unmount the card. For example, in Mac OS X v.10.4.3, it's a menu item on the Finder menu in the menubar, and you can watch the Trash icon animate from being filled with white colored debris to an empty Trash can.

If that's not the problem and solution, you may need to reformat the card as Raymate noted, if that's an option with the device driver (another option might be to "erase").

yes, putting the files in the trash does not delete them, you have to then empty the trash. To format the card (assuming OSX) use Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilities folder, you can choose Mac or PC formats, I suggest FAT16 for maximum compatibility. Be careful to select the correct disk before formating.
