Lovely HDR's Randall. Most likely going to replace my 24-70 with this as I can't keep it and get a 300L at the same time.

The images in this thread are what made my decision to purchase this lens. Took it out on the first day and must say I can't wait to use it more. Did some high iso low light shooting as well and the images were outstanding. This isn't one of them (of course) but I liked the sharpness.

I would assume the VC folks would want a new thread.... dunno though.... I just picked up a mint non-VC version for an unbelievable price of $280 CAD.... so ill be posting in this thread once my lens arrives and its all mounted on my 50D!

I agree with JayStar. They should definitely make a new thread as the lens is a completely new version. Seeing as how the old lens is constructed with 13 Groups/16 Elements and the new one is constructed with 14 Groups/19 Elements. This should mean the the optical qualities will be different. So, after all that babble I say new thread for sure!! :)
I just received shipping info on my Non-VC version, so I am itching to try it out and post here!

To a certain extent I agree completely about comparing this lens to the 17-40L. We all know that build quality is second to none on the Ls and I know this personally from using them in the past. The focusing that USM provides is always going to be faster and quieter than the standard focus motors. However, optically the Tamron is on level if not higher ground than the 17-40L. I am only comparing the optical quality and nothing else. I guess many people are looking for that "bang of the buck" factor and the Tamron provides that to an extent that would make many people, even myself say things like, "This lens produces better than the 17-40L."
Edit:
Right after reading this post again, I thought that maybe you were actually looking at this from the other side of the coin (my side in fact). If that is so, sorry to come across as a strong defender of the Tammie! 8)

no worries in any event. :)
i just don't see the logic in comparing a >$700 full frame f/4 ultrawide/landscape lens to a ~$450 crop frame f/2.8 walkabout/general purpose lens.
i mean, yes, the 17-40 will physically mount up and cover most of the same focal length range, but with so many penalties... (cost, size, weight, speed).
there are certain specific scenarios where putting full frame lenses on croppers makes sense, but most of the time it's a waste of resources. people should have VERY well-defined reasons for picking the 17-40l over this tammy.

If the VC system is as good as it was in the 18-270mm, then you will be EXTREMELY happy! That VC was almost sickening in terms of how slow you could hand hold shots. It was a great all-around lens while I had it and the VC was easily on par and, in my opinion, actually quite a bit ahead of it.

I thought only my Tamron does this until I found posts below. I need to use it more to loosing it up . I am glad that I fould this, it has alway kind of bugging me. Thanks.
ah, just a question guys. is the zoom ring of the tamron 17-50 hard to turn?
a friend of mine recently got this lens (but for the Nikon mount), and I tried
the lens and turn the zoom ring but i had to exert a great deal of effort
compared to turning the zoom ring of my Canon EF-S 55-250mm.
was that normal? or was it a bad copy that my friend had?
i'm also planning to get this wonderful lens along with the 60mm
and i'm concerned with the 'zoom ring issue'. thanks :)
My Tamron 17-50mm was a tad tight when I first got it.. After 18 months use the zoom ring is silky smooth..
It will loosen up after use..

Out of all of the gear that I sold to make this happen, the only one that I suspect I will miss is the Tokina 11-16, but the Sigma 10-20 should be a suitable replacement. Only time will tell though.

This is such a really great lens, it has served me very well for the last 2 years. Of all the lenses I have, this has been my go to lens for that whole time. I've probably taken nearly 60% of all of my photos in the last 2 years with this lens.
I'm about to move to full frame, 5dMkii and 24-70L, but I have much respect for this lens. The only thing I felt needed improvement was manual focus, the focus ring just wasn't smooth enough for manual adjustments.
Anyway, a few of my recent favorites taken with the lens:

There's nothing unique about the way the photo was taken. I did spend some time in photoshop playing with it. The reason it looks the way it does is because I tweaked the shadows and highlights, which sort of gives it that "HDR" look, even though it's just one single exposure. I wanted the tree to pop out of the frame. Also, it was taken at f/2.8, so I think the shallow DOF is a playing into this effect somewhat.
I'll post up the original later tonight if anyone is interested in seeing it.

i have a question, does the hunting in low light the same with the 18-55mm IS kit lens?

i dont know about 1855IS. but 1750 does slow in low light, but it really depends on how low the light is.
Cant compare with USM canon / L series. :D
For the quality, it's very good.
(i ever had this long time ago, and sold it for L series).

I can't speak to the 18-55 IS, but it focuses better in low light than the old 18-55 non-IS kit lens. But, it depends on your camera body also. On the XS and XT bodies, IIRC, there is no sensitive f/2.8 AF point so those two bodies can't take advantage of the larger aperture of the Tamron. You might not notice any better focusing ability in low light.

The only advantage the canon has is the faster autofocus and the IS. How often do you have rapidly moving subjects with this FL? It works great for people and I have even shot my friends playing basketball with it and it was reliable. And how often do you even use IS on a wide angle.

Exactly, I really don't have any plans to do that. Seems like most people say the 17-55 is better, and it is, but it costs twice as much, so it's not really worth it.

I bought mine from B&H about two years ago and had similar problems. I sent it to Tamron under warranty and it came back perfect. Might be quicker to do that than continually returning it to the store.

Since there is no dedicated Promaster 17-50 thread, I'll post my first pics here. The Promaster is just a rebadged Tamron anyway, exact same lens, same factory etc. except the rubber on the zoom ring (and promaster text). It was cheap and it is good. In fact, it is a much sharper, better copy than the brand new Tamron 17-50 I bought a year ago which I sent it back a few days later (then I went the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS way).
Anyway, the Tamron/Promaster 17-50 2.8 has always intrigued me, so I couldn't pass one up for a resonable price. Great value lens, good copy.
Some winter pics, just resized. And one 100% crop. (Camera XT) Oh, and these pictures were taken with a Promaster clear filter on the lens, it may be even better without the filter :)

A old shot i took this summer while at a central michigan university tailgate...
Its a guy dressed in a hot dog suite! I never gave a second look to this photo due to all the blow highlights but noticed it tonight and liked how the hot dog guy looked so its getting its second chance..haha
