Kind of ironic how all that top grade Canon gear's picture was taken with a Tamron, LOL.
Hehhehhehe... Yeah, I know Jay... Had to borrow the Tamron from a friend of mine to take a shot of my current inventory... Nonetheless, it does capture it nicely, no?! Hehhehehehe....

Are these images with the VC version or the non-VC version? Is the VC worth the extra cost?

These were all taken with the non-VC version. In my opinion, the VC version is not worth the extra cost.

And from what I've heard/read, there are more complaints with it as well.

Wouldn't be surprised at all. I think VC would be totally useless at those focal lengths, especially with a 2.8 max aperture lens. Unfortunately, a lot of people think that having VC will make them better at photography so they think they "have" to have it.

Thanks guys. It's a no brainer. I've just ordered a 17-50 non VC for £280. Jessops in the UK are selling the 17-50 VC for £529. That's almost double the cost.

Yep! Amazon.co.uk. Jessops is a bit overpriced, but usually only a bit over their competitors, so I guess everybody is selling the bew one for about £480, something like that. So I think I've got a snip, but it hasn't come yet so we'll see!

My next question about this lens is its reliability. Some have said in amazon how it is not that reliable and when it breaks, it is very difficult to deal with the issue.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B000FZ3FY8/ref=cm_cr_pr_hist_3?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&filterBy=addThreeStar
I have also found out that the warranty here is only for 1 year as a posed to 6 years over in america :(
I would be upset if i buy this and ends up being a dud and a nightmare to sort out.
The IQ and features of this lens are brilliant but whats stopping me from buying it is the build quality/reliablity of the lens plus the hassle of dealing with any issues that could occur with this lens.
Thanks in advance.

Jonney, yes Tamron does have an issues with QC but these last few batches of production Tamron 17-50mm have yielded better lenses in terms of build quality, I think Tamron got the message with having a lot of bad copies. There is a 6 year US warranty through Tamron and also Amazon itself has a really good exchange/return policy. The only thing you should be aware of is the fact that some copies have a tendency to front focus a tad. This issue is fairly common i'd say about 1/5 copies front focus enough for the user to notice, though honestly MOST lenses are not truly perfect, but for these Tamrons its noticeable and again a QC problem. This can be solved by exchanging for another copy or...micro adjust if your body has that function. My copy does not have this issue, but when I bought it a year ago I do remember it was an issue, that's why I bought mine BRAND NEW jsut in case I had that issue, I could exchange it. In terms of build quality and reliability I think it's good especially for the price but don't expect it to rival L lens build quality.

How can you tell if your 17-50 has a slight front focusing problem? What procedure would you use to determine this? Do you need to shoot charts etc. to pin point the issue? I think my copy is fine but I'm not sure if it within the recommended tolerance. Just curious.....

Yeah, there's charts you can print out and shoot. Or just line up a few items close to each other and focus on one item and see where the image is sharpest. I used batteries:

I've never dropped a lens until today
http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt108/samhunterphoto/Broken%20Tamron/IMG_4714.jpg Have you thought about repairing it? If the glass is intact it might be worth it.
I didn't drop mine, but as I was walking behind someone who shook a dead tree, a branch from it fell straight on my lens (I was glad it didn't fall on my head) and it ripped a little hole in one of the plastic elements. I am planning to send it Tamron to see how much it will cost to repair it.

Bigrig said it all, I used print out focus charts, retail focus charts, and item focused methods, the thing that I think Bigrig just didn't elaborate enough on is the fact that its much easier to do with objects that have a lot of details like the batteries he chose, then just take 100% crops then go from there.

Thanks for the tip. In this case would you set your AF to the center point and adjust the aperture to f/2.8 (or close to wide open) and fire away? Would it be possible to have a good lens but have focusing issues with the camera? How do you isolate the lens from the camera? I hope this makes sense.

You would have access to another body / another lens or two to make sure it's not only the lens that's not focusing correctly.

But before you get all caught up in pixel peeping, if you liked your shots before anyone said anything do not get swept up in the most minuscule of details, your body and lens will only give you so much detail.

I received my Tamron 17-50 lens a few days ago. My first wide angle lens. I love the fact that I can now get the entire building or landscape in the picture. My old 28-135 just was'nt cutting it. I bought mine new on Ebay for $393 shipping included.
I had a play with the 28-135 lens in a shop and tbh, it wasnt wide enough for my liking either.
Your best getting this lens along with a tele lens to cover most lengths whilst maintaining high IQ across it.

Try the tamron 17-35. Around $300 used. Very sharp.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!!!
I've since checked the posts for that lens and its looking very promising ...and cheap too! :)

There a lot of mixed reviews about the VC version, I honestly do not think it is worth it, but I have never used it, I think if you are willing to shell out the extra $200 might as well add another $100-150 on top of that and get the Canon 17-55 IS.

probably around f/8.
smaller apertures suffer from excessive diffusion.

Take a look at this image... there you can see different focal lengths with their respective sharpness at different apertures.

The DOF is narrow, but that's what you get on any lens when opened up. The focus point on my lens is sharp at all stops, DOF changes.

Diffusion?
yes, diffusion. the bending and subsequent scattering of light waves.

trust me, the lens is less sharp at f/32. ;) optical physics says so. focus and/or DOF has nothing to do with it.
as you can see from the chart posted above by worthy, f/8 is actually slightly past the sweetest spot, which is between f/4 and f/5.6.

OK, I get what you are saying. I think I've seen this before. The whole "sweet spot" thing.I've never tested it. Most of my settings are between 5.6 and 11, unless I am trying to achieve some effect of some kind.

Today Central Michigan University Police Officer Jeff Ballard had a little time to spare and i owed him some photos, so, we shot!
The lights are a bit hot in some spots but i was going for a more bright, crazy light style on some. Although i will say the lighting in some spots are too bright for what i was going for. Overall it was my first time shooting with 3 lights and i haven't mastered lights at all yet, but this was some good practice for me!

Thanks for the input! All i did reguarding post with her eyes was a little dodging to brighten up the brown a tad more so her pupil size is exactly how it was shot. Im guessing it could be because the room we shot in was somewhat dim.
