never used for weddings,
but used in small apartment worked good.
if you relying on it for big money jobs like weddings you should get the canon

I have had this lens for 3 days now and i find its slightly front focusing. Dont know if its me or the lens since this is my first ever camera. I tried a few focus tests posted around the net and in all but one photo i took they were front focusing. The one that hit the spot was @ 35mm focal length. Maybe thats the sweet spot of the lens. Im rather dissapointed since this will be my only lens for years to come

question to others:
have you noticed that the left side of the frame is soft compared to the right at 50mm and f/2.8? Here is an example:
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5255/5390998752_e59a262f32_b.jpg (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5255/5390998752_1da427c40f_o.jpg)
(click for 100%)
as you can see, the far left of the frame (front bumper) is significantly softer than the far right (rear bumper) and they're about the same distance from the plane of focus...
Anyone else seeing anything similar? It's the only thing that bothers me about this lens.
That's just the depth of field. Use a higher f/stop for more depth of field.

OK, just a reminder, the DOF at 50mm with f2.8 aperture and five feet is ....
about three inches !

hint: longer than that car!

well, if you actually READ the post rather than just spouting nonsense, you will see where I said "the far left of the frame (front bumper) is significantly softer than the far right (rear bumper) and they're about the same distance from the plane of focus..."
and like I said in the post you responded to, I'VE ALREADY TRIED THIS.

Yes, but I wasn't saying "why is the left side blurry?"
I was asking if anyone was having the same problem.
Anyway, do you guys think this is something I could send the lens in and get corrected? no one else seems to be having this problem... if I could get this fixed, I would love this lens... right now, I'm on the verge of wanting to dump it.

my last image to this thread :(
sold my tamron moved to the canon 17-40 L, miss the f2.8
the tamron is a great lens, but the optics are not quite L quality, mainly the color rendition.
the sharpness is L quality or better.
i tested on my colorchecker, and the custom profile created from the 17-40, is almost the same as the standard profile, but for the 17-50 more noticeably different.
but Jesus the tamron is great xD, you can't go wrong with it.
Here is probably the last image from me, unless i go digging through more photos

Non VC-The CA produce quite high at 17mm-34mm. Thought that will affect the sharpness/quality. This is I worry about. Im doubt whether going to get this lens or not. Seeking for advise from expert here. Many thanks in advanced.

-Performance great.
-AF Speed fast enough.
-AF noice (just a little. Not as noise as I imagine)
-Consistence great sharpness.
Finally I bought it. Will test more again and share the result here. Tks. ^^

Finally got a 50D to replace my Rebel XT and I feel much more comfortable using this lens @ f/2.8 due to a better AF system. The lens is sharper wide open now than it was on the old camera. no MA was needed.

rcdy, garben, buy it used, it a superb lens., used saves you 150 bucks, way better then kit lens,
it is one of the best bang for your buck zooms, especially this range, i guess the other bang for your buck zoom would be the 70-200mm f4 L
it not as fast focusing as canon L lens, not as good color rendition as canon L,but you can get it for 350 or less used, and it a ton better then the canon zooms in that range

Got my Tamron 17 50mm yesterday, it's not a bad lens. The first thing I decided to when I recieved it was take some lightbox photos. This is the result, the lens is sharp boy.

I just traded for this lens. First thing I noticed is the loud zippy AF compared to the 28-75. Not a problem, since I'm never in a situation where it would affect me negatively. Another thing is when shooting at the same distance, this lens is a lot shorter in focal length at 50mm than my nifty fifty. Other than that, sharpness seems to be on par with my nifty fifty. Time to get out and start shootin'.

From the specification. It say min distance would be 0.27m. But it could be done at shorter distance.

For the longest time, I had gear envy and thought that only FF would make great studio portraits. Well, I was wrong and I know I needed to work on my technique before upgrading gear. Although a 5D is ultimately my goal, my 40D + Tammy 17-50 works wonders for what I shoot.

That would be because it is an actual "50" and not a "50 x 1.6 crop" (which is what your "nifty" is).

Huh? Whatever lens you stick on a crop camera will be x 1.6.
So the 17-50 is equivalent to 27-80mm on a full frame.

No it's not. Lenses made for aps-c sensors will be what they say they are. The tamron 17-50 2.8 is an aps-c lens. Of course I could be wrong :-) ... wouldn't be the first time.

You are. All lenses list their actual focal length and all lenses will be 1.6x narrower on APS-C compared to FF. The 17-50 is equivalent to 27-80mm in FF terms. So in other words, if you put a 28-75mm on a FF camera and a 17-50 on an APS-C camera, the zoom range is near identical.

I stand corrected :-). I always thought the apsc lenses were designed for the smaller crop sensor so that if it said it was 17-50 then it had a 17-50 field of view whereas lenses designed for "full frame" (35mm ie; the EOS lenses) needed to be multiplied by the crop amount (1.6 in this case) to determine the field of view.

How well does this lens work with the 7d? I am looking for a landscape/walk around lens

If you mean the crop sensor, 17-50 is a perfect range for walkabout and landscape (although I prefer the WOW effect from extra wide or tele in landscape)
If you mean focusing, it is not an issue for this lens, it is pretty much fast, noisy in a funny way but who cares.
If you mean f2.8, you won't probably need it for landscape at daytime. IS could be more beneficial. So either going to the high priced Canon 17-55 or to the new 15-85 if you have the extra money. All fit well with Canon high end crop cameras.
If you are considering the upgrade to a full frame soon (5D mkII for e.g.) then you should consider something less wide like Tamron 24-70 or Canon 24-70 / 24-105. All still great on 7D but with a little loss on the wide end.

Salma, it's a great studio you have and great results considering the basic gears you have.
You work is just another proof that it is the photographer eye and talent that matters not how expensive his gears is :)
I specially love the composition and the colors in the first photo (with red dress)
Keep up the good work.

Picked up another 17-50 2.8... missed the 2.8 but not the range. This will be my indoor lens, where the 24-105 will be my outdoor walkaround lens.

I bought this lens to replace it's cousin the 28-75mm version because I was missing the 17-27mm range and I was a little skeptical about it because I had a great copy of the 28-75mm but after a couple of months I can say this lens is just as good or even a tad sharper than the 28-75mm it replaced. The sharpness and the colors are simply amazing for a lens in this price range, the images are simply mind blowing, great indoor portrait lens and a great outdoor landscape or cityscape lens or a walk-around do it all type lens.

planning to buy this lens (non VC)
but i was told stories about two versions of lens, one assembled in China, and another Made in Japan. I was told made in Japan has better IQ and error free. here in India its difficult to get made in Japan copy.
is this true? does there exist 2 copies? can the users throw more light on this.
Thanks
