I did very little PP as the exposure was about just perfect, I sharpened (just select Filter -> Sharpen in PS CS2), no noise reduction, some adjusts in contrast and shaow then crop to straighten it up. Amazing lens.

Excuse the quality of the last one as that was a one second exposure, ISO 1600 (I had no tripod) handheld ...
I love the lense; sharpness is top notch; build quality is OK (I dont like that you cant have full time manual focus), flare control is got, and value for money is 10/10

I really like the shot up into the tree, great idea and came out so well.
The waterfall pic is great too.

Great picture. What is that thing the sky? Could you post a 100% crop for the conspiracy-flying-saucy-saucer-theorists.
I compared the lens to my friends 17-40 and the Tammy was sharper! Shame on canon for charging two times more for a lense that is softer and slower simply because it focuses faster!

Sorry to dissapoint Illy but its just a plane... ;)
At 1 sec exposure its has time to make a trail and the flashing wing lights get caught as well.
Yes, I read in several reviews that it was sharper than quite a few Canon lenses.

Heres one of the first i took with my 17-50 f/2.8 on my new 30D
that was my first question.. is this lens compatible with the 30D? only reason i'm asking is because of b&h's disclaimer, "Not compatible with 35mm or digital cameras with image sensor larger than APS-C size".. and i'm ignorant to the whole "APS-C size" topic.
:)
EDIT: i read further into this thread and found that this lens is only compatible with crop sensor cameras. i.e. the 30D. whoops.

:)It will work fine on your 30D. The cameras it won't work on are the 1D, 1Ds, and 5D. Their sensors are all larger, so there would be vignetting.

What was your focus point set at?
Initial impression is that the build quality is about the same as the other current tammies.
The AF has a higher freq sound compared to the 17-35 and 28-75. The AF is also quicker than the two lenses as well. In terms of optics, it looks very impressive. The corner is pretty sharp at f2.8 at all focal lengths and sharpens up a touch by f4 and at about f11, things start to soften up again, but not bad till about f16/22. Things are soft by f32.
CA isn't bad at 17mm f2.8, which should have the worst CA.
I took two shots under flare situations with and without a S&W Multicoated UV filter, so you can see for yourself if there is any difference.
whole gallery is here, all shot in RAW at ISO 800 (woops too excited and forgot to turn it down), converted to High qual JPEG in RSP. http://tomyi.smugmug.com/gallery/1844047
ok, 17mm f2.8 focus is on the center not the corner, so it's oof.
http://tomyi.smugmug.com/photos/92415965-M.jpg
100% of the CA, per photozone.de CA and vingetting is worst at 17mm f2.8 so this should be the worst situation.
http://tomyi.smugmug.com/photos/92415966-M.jpg
Now some tests with and without a filter. You decide which is which

It's a tooth-shaped plastic container situated along the banks of the Don Valley Parkway in Toronto, Canada. I have another photo of it. The containers are filled with old plastic containers and other plastic products. It's purpose is to clean rainwater as it filters down during its natural cycle. There are also small trees and plants growing on top of it during the warmer seasons. It's very neat!

To be honest, I wasn't happy saturday morning when I received it. Later I realized the problem was with my camera (front focus on a 350D). In this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=294973) I explain it all and how I fixed it.

A quick shot to add to the archive. I should post a 100% crop of this when I get a chance, because the level of detail that is in the green leaves is simply astounding. (And now, there's not a color problem with the lens...I desaturated the dead leaves a fair amount.)

The tammy 17-50 is a very good lens, and a great value. I have no qualms shooting it wide open, and it is plenty sharp to my eyes. I've tried the 17-40, and frankly the IQ just didn't impress me - certainly not the way my 70-200/2.8 does. The way I look at it is that 1.6 crop cams will always be around, because canon will always want the entry level to be as cheap as possible. So, even if you move to full frame you will always be able to resell the lens to somebody, and you could even prop up the price of your used dslr by including the lens to make a "kit". It just doesn't make sense to me to spend an extra $200+ dollars now, because you might lose $100. In fact, if you look around at used prices, the 17-40 isn't doing so hot on its resale either.
I know in the future I will move up to a 1D series (love that mark 2), but I will keep the 20D and tammy as a lighter weight travel camera and backup body in general.

the first one is taken with Tamron 17-50 F4 1/15th at 50mm

Those are some very slow shutter speeds, Derek. I don't think you can conclude much from these shots. There needs to be as much "control" of your environment when comparing, such as tripod, MLU, sufficient shutter speeds, identical framing and static subject, accurate AF (so multiple attempts), etc. 100% crops are preferable too when comparing side-by-side.

the second one was taken with the Canon 17-85IS at 85mm ,f5.6 Iso200 ,1/8th
I wanted to see how effective IS so the both lenses were set to use different shutter speeds.
Now, I decided to keep this lens and return the Sigma 18-50EX macro .
The Tamron has better focus system than the Sigma ,the Sigma is more quiet but slower and less accurate in low light sistuation like this.

I wanted to know without a tripod , the Tamron can be still as sharp as the IS .......but wehn I get it back from the store , I will try to use a tripod .....sorry for the unscientific comparions , but at the time , I could not use my tripod and so tried to test how effective the IS could be ...........
Also , I wanted to post original files but I could not , told to re-size and I did so ...
But I think I will keep both lenses and return the Sigma 18-50Ex macro and EF-S60 , which is kind of useless lens for me .
thanks for your advice .

Ok, this thread has convinced me to buy the Tamron. I'd been looking at the vastly larger, heavier and more expensive Canon 17-55 IS, but I think this'll be pefect.
It's a shame it doesn't have image stabilisation, but it's probably not worth me spending $600 extra on. I just need to teach myself to have super-steady hands.

I know Tamron doesn't have a USM or HSM feature but how loud does this lens focus?
I've become spoiled on the USM on two of my three lenses and unfortunately Sigma doesn't have a HSM lens in the same range as my 17-70 and I'd love to have a lens with a constant apperature like this one or the Sigma 18-50. I hate the fact that the 17-70 doesn't have a constant Av.
Anyway, nice shots everyone.

I think I might send mine in for calibration. I haven't been completely satisfied with its performance wide open, especially outdoors. Highlights seem overblown, along with some CA. This lens is supersharp once I stop it down though, as you can tell in the photo.
Anyone had experience with Tamron regarding calibration/service?

Sure! Here's a couple, withthe embedded exif information intact to prove it. 2 focal points on the same shot... Only processing done was RAW conversion, and resize to make the image fit within the allowable dimensions.

At 17mm f/2.8 I have found CA to be pretty noticeable particularly in high contrast conditions, but Bibble gets rid of that easy enough. My only gripe is it tends to underexpose in lower light conditions (guessing that is due to low contrast). Otherwise, I am extremely happy with this lens. I haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet – I'll be taking more photos tonight with more controlled studio lighting to see how it does.

True.
The problem is - it's not the middle of day, but 5:30PM.
I need a wide lens primarily for landscapes. Also - notice that this is at f6.3, open more and it gets even nastier (I just picked one example, didn't try to find the worst)...
For general purpose I prefer my 28-75 Tamron (which is also sharper, with less distortion, and flatter focus plane)...

OK, so people seem to be pretty happy with the Tamron here... but can anyone compare it to the Sigma AF 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 Macro?
I need to replace my kit lens but really don't have the cash (sounds like everyone's situation I'll bet). I can get the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 for $399.00 locally, or get the Sigma 17-70 for $340.00 off ebay. With the Tamron I'm gaining the 2.8 straight thru, but I'm giving up 50-70mm. Also giving up the macro, but I haven't done any macro stuff and don't know how interested I am in that, but.......
Any suggestions?

I don't think you'll be disappointed with it. It's slow to focus and searches but then what macro doesn't. There's one thing you should know about it though that puts some people off. It reaches its optical peak at F8 which is why people call it the portrait macro – it isolates subjects really well. Most macros are supposed to reach their optical sweet spot at F11+ since that is where photo's are most often taken.
Oh, and my Tamron 17-50 isn't a slouch though it is no where near as fast as my L. I think its a perception due to the sound it makes when focusing that makes it seem slower. I've tested it against other lenses in its class and it's just barely slower than the fastest.

I'm with MaxxuM here. Focus speed is OK. The focus noise everyone harps on is not that noticeable (especially when shooting outside or otherwise noisy environment), and can't be heard more than a few feet anyway. If I was made of money, I would have picked the 17-55 f2.8 IS from Canon, but that lens is just that much bigger and heavier and not what I wanted in a walkabout lens.

Not a bad lens by any means, by far the best IQ of my humble collection of glass. Since we all can't afford L's (although skill/experience can help compensate for fancy equipment....none of which I have :( ).
The raws look so much better.

First weekend out with it (still trying to nail settings), only real complaint is the lack of weather sealing, but I did take it from a very cold/dry hotel room into a very warm and humid beach over the course of 10 minutes (condensation city...population : me). But I have since found several ways to combat that (moisture absorbent materials, ziplock bags, etc). Otherwise a nice lens, I look forward to testing it out every chance I get.
