couple from today:

Hmm I didn't know couple means five. He he, just being a smartass, sorry :P

Anyway, are those scenery shots appear underexposed? What I mean is the foreground trees appear dark and lack of detail. I could be wrong, and I know it appeared to be an overcast day at dusk hour.

The foreground trees are dark because the camera exposed for the sky. If ESMcBlurM3 exposed for the trees, the sky would've been blown out. In order to get everything "not dark", those photos would've needed bracketed exposures and HDR / photoshop processing.

Yep, I forgot my tripod, so I was limited to using a ISO and exposure at the sky only. I thought them came out okay considering the circumstances.

Couple (several) shots of my car that I liked from yesterday with the 17-50:

I've had this lens for a few years and thought I didn't like it but realize now that some of my out of focus pics were due to technique.

It's a little soft at 2.8 sometimes, so I try to keep the f/stop at 4 when possible...but few lenses aren't a little soft at 2.8 anyway.

I'd say it's the best bargain out there next to the 50 1.8.

I have no idea how the canon performs, but in the dark/low light, it is not this lens' strength. At least not on my 40D. If you have a flash mounted and use the IR beam for AF assist, it's fine (still struggles in the dark, as in outside at 8pm in late Oct w/ only moonlight and some christmas lights, heh)

Initial impression is that the build quality is about the same as the other current tammies.
The AF has a higher freq sound compared to the 17-35 and 28-75. The AF is also quicker than the two lenses as well. In terms of optics, it looks very impressive. The corner is pretty sharp at f2.8 at all focal lengths and sharpens up a touch by f4 and at about f11, things start to soften up again, but not bad till about f16/22. Things are soft by f32.

Do all lens suffer from this?

Not exactly. It is more a problem with the body and aperture than the lens itself. Check out this informative link: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/diffraction-photography.htm

Thanks in advance.

It'll hunt quite a bit in low light and sometimes even in good light. Its not as accurate as my 70-200 so I do get less keepers, but once you learn what you can and can't do in certain conditions your keeper rate will improve. Doesn't seem to be any worse than the 18-55 kit lens, but I didn't use that one a whole whole lot.

My first attempt in posting shots from my newly acquired Tamron lens.

In the first shot, the focus is on the Gloria Jeans coffee cup, however I thought this lens has front-focus problem as the text of the magazine on the table appeared to be in focus. The lens on right side in front is the Sigma 18-200mm OS lens btw.

In the second shot, the focus seems to be spot on. Not exactly shot at 45 degree, and it was shot handheld too.

Woo-Hoo! The brown truck arrived today! Attached are my first two test shots.

After using the Canon 17-85 as my only lens for the last 9 months, I have the following observations/comparisons:

Size and Weight compared to the Canon are roughly the same
Thankfully they use the same size filters (which I knew before ordering)
I really like the bokeh I've seen in my initial pictures with the Tammy
I like the rubber on the Tammy better for changing the focal length
I like the manual focus ring better on the Tammy
In the focal range of the Tammy, I dont miss having IS.
As far as AF, the Canon (ring USM) smokes the Tammy (too bad the Canon 17-55 cost WAY much more)
After being used to Canon's rotational direction for zooming, it takes getting used to for the Tammy
Can't wait to try this lens out in the daytime as I didn't get to play with it until tonight
For the money, I'm satisfied with my purchase. My only regret was not finding POTN sooner, and maybe I might have purchased the Tammy 9 months ago instead of the Canon

Since you already have the 17-85, you are in a perfect position to know if you're better off with the Tamron 17-50 or Tamron 28-75. Both are excellent.

I think IS is a big advantage if i can afford it.

Only you youself know whether the price of Canon 17-55mm lens is worth it.

For me personally, it's not worth it. Here in Australia, the price of the Canon is about three times the price of the Tamron. Bloody THREE times!!! IS and ring USM are not worth the price difference. I'll only get the Canon if it is 50% more.

Only you youself know whether the price of Canon 17-55mm lens is worth it.

For me personally, it's not worth it.
I tried a 17-55 once. I know it gets a ton of praise, but I didn't see the big deal. I actually preferred the Tamron, so I returned the Canon.

I see in your gear list that you have a Canon 70-200 f/4 IS. I think ill just trade my 70-200 f/4 with an IS because its more of a heavier lens and IS will be a big help.

Yes, it works well. You can even see the difference in the viewfinder.

I'm thinking about making this change also. You really think its worth it to swap from the 17-85 to this lens?
As I've only had the lens for a couple days, I'm not sure if I'd say "swap". If I end up like Daniel2000 and find my 17-85 is collecting dust, then I'd consider selling it. But for right now I plan on keeping both. I bought the Tamron wanting a little better low-light capability and better bokeh. But in good lighting, the 17-85's faster AF and longer focal-length range make it a good walk-around lens too.

If you think IS is worth it and you need a constant f/2.8, then the Canon EF-S 17-55IS f/2.8 is the only game in town ;)

Of course, not seeing what kind of blur you have, it could be also possible that the IS would not of helped in those cases.

I bought this lens like three weeks ago but after using it on Thanksgiving i have some pictures that was blurry due to camera shake. I was shooting indoors so im using wide aperture with external flash and iso 400. Im thinking about trading it for Canon 17-55 2.8 IS but its $550.00 more. IS is a big help but $550.00 is a lot of money.

I just bought this lens and when i use it with my 20d in AF mode it does not beep when in focus, but when i switched to MF it does. Is that normal?

I don't know, I deactived the beep sound

Edit: just tested it and it does do the beep in Green box mode in AF, but not in P/AV/TV or M, It does it only in MF
note: I changed my focus button to the * instead of the shutter

Mine has a "quirk" to it where every once in a while when I first power on the camera the lens wont AF. I just switch it to MF and then back to AF and it works fine. You could clean the lens contacts to see if that helps.

Thanks. I tried what you did and it acted the same way. At least now I know that there are others out there and that my lens is not defective. BTW how do you set the *button to do the focusing?

Isn't the orbis quite awkward to use? Having to hold both your flash with the Orbis on it in one hand, shooting trough it with you camera in the other? Zooming is out of the question! :P

Some people suggested that I should adjust the white balance on those shots. However, I was trying to use the natural amber lighting that the single light in my garage provides. Does this make sense? How would you alter the pictures (primarily the interior one)?

Hows this lens compared to the canon 17-55mm 2.8 IS?

Do a google or search the forums on this site and other photography sites, there are plenty of user comparison between these 2 lenses. My general conclusion from various posts seem to indicate both lenses have similar sharpness in picture quality, however Canon with its 1) ultrafast autofocus; 2) ultra quiet autofocus; and 3) Image Stabilisation are three important advantages. Of course the Tamron costs like about three times cheaper. So it's up to individual to evaluate whether he/she is willing to pay three times the price for those three features.

It doesnt unless you get a GREAT copy of this lens. mine was not that sharp and its hard to get a great copy.

I would suggest searching for more comparisons between the tammy and canon. I haven't used a 17-55 IS, but from other comparisons the IQ (though not the AF or IS) should be similar between the two.
