I like the lighting and the colors in this one. Is it just the natural light from the window (I'm assuming that is where the light is coming from)?

There is a window up high towards the right of the cupboards but there was also off camera flash at camera left. Single 580EX II at low power feathered and bounced off of the washing machines.

This was shot with my tamron 17-50mm and a 12mm extension tube, in my DIY lightbox. I was literally within 1" from the subject before I could attain focus:

http://photos.kodanja.net/img/v7/p51012649-4.jpg

This was shot with just the tamron, natural sidelight from the subjects right side, manual 2nd curtain fill flash bounced from a reflector on the subjects left side:

I might be doing a lot of shakes. I'll take some shots tonight or check my photos at home. I think I expect too much for 2.8 compared to 3.5 or 5. I recall when I took a photo of my daughter and focused in the eyes & same distance the eye lashes aren't as sharp as the f3.5 or f5.

This sounds strange...my copy @ 2.8 50mm is almost as sharp as f/5!
You might have a focuing issue..

can i know how much difference is this lens if compared to the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG EX MACRO lens(not the newer HSM version)?
in terms of sharpness and image quality?
how about the focusing speed?

I've had this lens for a while and haven't had a chance to post here, so here are a couple of pics from this lens. These were taken yesterday, the exif should be there still. pp was done with lightroom, I use bibble so I don't know how these came out really. I'm used to bibble and can work with it much better, but my computer was at work and had to use windows.

it always strikes me as funny when people ask if their lens is sharp...

if you can't tell, why does it matter? ;)

ime, aperture-wise the sweet spot of this lens is in the 4-5.6 range in terms of sharpness, which is actually pretty typical. no point going past f8.

Hmm - so you can mount it on a FF but you've got the smaller view? I guess you could have DPP or ACR auto crop in during post-processing. The FF Nikons I think has a mode to shoot with cropped lenses and automaticaly crop the image in camera.

Hehe yeah I would if I did go FF :) But its good to know that in a pinch the 17-50 can be mounted because it looks like it has an EF mount. I checked dpreview and found the mention about Nikon FFs able to use their cropped format lenses. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3x/page4.asp (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3x/page4.asp)

The only difference would be that on the Canon FF I'd have to crop it in PP...

How exactly is that helpful? This thread clearly demonstrates the Tamron is more than capable. If you feel like you need IS that badly for such a short focal length, well good for you.

Some said the AF was noisy, but it's not as bad as some other Canon lenses I've owned, I can definitely live with it. I look forward to using this lens more and seeing what it can do for the price.

I really like the sharpness.. but I think my copy has front focus... sometimes it's sharp though...

can it be a lens only has front focus @ 50mm and not at let's say 45mm??

or maybe it's just the AF not doing it's job a 100% and the last option.. maybe it's me ;)

PS is there any way to correct a front focus?

If you are always getting unsharp images then I could say it's front focusing.. If sometimes I would say in this case it's user error..

I tried with the focus test chart and 30mm in front was always super sharp...

Like I thought it would be... then I took some pictures from objects..CD's.. one an inch in front and next to the other...

it's like sometimes it does what it's supposed to do.. then other times it's NOT... but like 8 times not sharp.. 2 times it is... so I guess front focus in some degree...

I think I need to send it in for repair :s

I love to play with shallow DOF but atm lens is only use-able at f 4

otherwise great lens yes

Post some of these pictures up. Focus test charts are notoriously hard to get right and can give misleading results. If you're shooting stuff like batteries in an angled column, etc, make sure you give enough spacing between the objects for your AF sensor area to work. If you were consistently front-focusing that is likely the lens or body or both. But since you have some that are in focus, then like yogestee said, it could be something you're doing.

I did some other testing and I'm 99% sure that the DOF is like 1mm behind the point of focus and alot more in front....

I think that's why I sometimes get lucky like in this case with taking just two pics to show the focus problem

focus on the right one

http://www.wijnforum.be/focus_juist-1.jpg

focus on the left and futherst back..

http://www.wijnforum.be/focus_juist-2.jpg

you can actually see it's spot on :s

So I guess it just comes down to the AF in the tamron then...? although when doing the focus test with the well known paper.. my 50mm f1.8 was always spot on.. not so with the tamron.. never in 20 shots or so and ok I didnt use a tripod but I also didnt use one with the nifty nifty...

I wanted to sell the nifty nifty because I found the quality of the tamron sufficient not to use the 50mm again but now I have doubts ;)

Hi germinal,

Thanks for posting but it is still difficult to tell what is going on. Can you post the full-size photos with EXIF intact?

Generally, the 50mm f/1.8's AF motor isn't very consistent so I'm a bit surprised that you got 20/20 for it so if your Tamron is worse than that there could be something going on with your Tarmon.

But, these tests that you're doing - are you shooting the middle of the CD cases or the near edges? How much of the AF point does it take up? Since you are going handheld (not advised) are you close to your subject and possibly shifting forward or backward (breathing) and thus moving your focal plane? Are you zooming into focus and then zooming out to shoot? Are you recreating the exact conditions as with your 50?

And more importantly, are you noticing this front-focus on everyday shooting stuff?

I did some other testing and I'm 99% sure that the DOF is like 1mm behind the point of focus and alot more in front....

I think that's why I sometimes get lucky like in this case with taking just two pics to show the focus problem

Well, with Flickr I don't, but sometimes I like to post pics without completely ruining them. I know .jpg to .jpg size conversion can lose alot of IQ. I was just wondering the best way to do it from RAW to .jpg without losing too much information.

ride5000

you're going to make yourself sick worrying about all this stuff.

stay raw as long as you can, stay high bit depth as long as you can, render once to full size jpg, upload to host, enjoy. :)

i have been perfectly satisfied with the way flickr resizes (shrinks) pics.

if you're really interested in keeping file sizes small, use the smallest img dimensions you can, and don't be afraid of cranking the jpg compression up--as long as you compress that jpg ONCE and at the END of your workflow, you'd be amazed at how efficient and transparent jpg compression can be.

If it is "washed out", then you need to check your output settings.

Output to JPG, Colorspace = sRGB.

If you're using Photoshop make sure you have the latest color profiles.

Got mine in Feb. brand new. Just sent it in last week because the lens front focused and was producing soft pictures.

How did I know it front focused? I had a suspicion when I was taking a picture of 3 people with the middle person about 1/2 a step back from the two people beside her. My AF was on the middle person with no focus and re-frame. The picture came out the two people on the side was in focus while the middles person was blurry. This was evident even with no crop.

Yes I did a focus chart test on a tripod with live view on manual focus as well as AF.

c&c welcome. how come my photos are always so hazy?! it was a little hazy that morning, but can it do with focus issues? or the aperture not being set
high enough to say f10 ? i'm a newbie so any suggestions would be helpful thanks. i want to take be able to take photos like the ones above!!!
what haze are you speaking of?
From the picture you posted, I don't think it's a matter of haze, but it looks underexposed.
Maybe you can try HDR. I bet that photo would look AWESOME if you did that.

Unfortunately, I don't have photoshop nor do I know how to use it, so I don't do HDR, either.

btw, the photos above look like they were taken at longer exposure times and tweeked in PP.

hey hyuni,
thanks for your suggestions. it bugs me all the time to compare my photos to better one. mine just isn't as clear or sharp, but it'll take baby steps one at at time!

It's difficult to tell with such a small image..

One problem I do see is the subject's brightness range (the difference between the dark and light areas) is greater than the dynamic range your camera can handle.. Don't worry too much about this at present,,it's one of the failings of digital photography..

Notice how in LeMoNsZ's photos, you can't see the sun in any of them, it is just below the horizon, which provides just enough light to expose the foreground correctly and get those nice colours. Because yours is pointing directly at the sun, the camera compensates for the light by reducing exposure time so the sun isn't blown, which in turn underexposes the foreground.

To make shots like yours work, you can use an ND filter (pref ND8 ), stacked with maybe a polarizer or ND grad, which further darkens the sky. You could also try a HDR like Hyuni suggested, but imo they usually turn out grainy and oversaturated, but it's personal preference. Try it and see if you like it! (Just google "How to take HDR photos" or something).

Hope this helped.

P.S. The best aperture for landscapes is usually f/8 - f/11.

Just picked up a 17-50 f/2.8...here are a couple shots just playing around with it after I got it.

Not the best pics...I just ran out and took a few before work this morning to get some decent light. I know the composition of the pics are not the best so go easy on me! :)

1/4000 @ f/2.8 - ISO 200

Looks like I got a keeper to me.
