Thanks man. I don't see any reason why your 28-75 can't capture a shot like that. That particular shot had a lot less to do with the lens, and a lot more to do with the lighting. It helps being in the right place at the right time. ;)

The 10-17 and 17-50 will? If that's what ya meant then yeah I have been considering keeping the 10-17. I already have the 28-75 sold... so I will most likely keep the Tokina.

I sent mine in for slight backfocus issues around Christmas time, and it took just under 3 weeks door to door.

I just got my Tammy.. not sure if it's focusing correctly. Hoping you guys could help me out. These were shot on a tripod using a wireless remote shutter release. I shot in sRAW, opened in PS CS4, did minor level adjustments, then took a screen capture to upload the PNG image to my Photobucket. No sharpening was done in PS.

Beautiful cat :) You're at 1/40s, it can get tricky to get a sharp pic of a cat at that shutterspeed without a flash. Are most of your shots that are OOF with living subjects at speeds less than 1/80s?

jtso,

I agree with blssdwf on the shutter speed issue.

Also, f/3.2 gives a pretty narrow depth of field. The ears and forehead look really sharp for that aperature.

I had a lot of difficulty adjusting to the focal range of this lense (and still have issues), but that is not the lenses fault, it is mine.

Run up your ISO and try to stop down the aperature and also increase the shutter speed, you will see your image shapness increase acordingly.

It's hard to get the spot on focus on something like a cat that won't sit still long enough to allow you to do so. Even if you do, they move and you have to start over.

Great looking kitty! keep sharing...

I think I had it on "P" and didn't use a flash. Will try again today with a tripod and see what happens.

Okay this time I chose a static object and did a comparison against my Canon 28-135 IS using a tripod and wireless shutter release. All 100% crops of the OG image. All done using a 40D in RAW.

It certainly transitions from light to dark pretty fast. Is that the actual lighting, or something else?

DOF and sharpness look great.

Does anyone try to adjust a front focus with the 50D and micro adjustment mode ?

I checked my old Tamron 17-50 which worked for a year with my old 400D. And i think this one has a front focus. I made a lot of shoot to check the front focus with and without the micro adjustement mode in the 50D. Finally I put +12 to adjust my front focus. Is it normal to you ?

How many adjustment did you put if you have a front or back focus with this lens ?

Cheers,
Steeve

Hello. I have this lens now for over 1 year, its been really great piece of equipment. Till few days ago on trip to Kiel, Germany something went wrong. It was a picnic with loads of Irish Terriers, and most probably during that time the lens hood got hit and now wobbles. (Here is video to see what exactly i mean http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIk8FriFHHg) I know that it is not fatal damage. IQ is good as it was, focus works fine but only thing is the front end which wobbles. :s I wonder does warranty cover that kind of damage?

Trumpet_guy and kokakaste2,

I found a Youtube video that does what trumpet_guy talks about in his FM post.

**DISCLAIMER** This repair, although simple, is risky and you can accidentally scratch the front lens element or overtighten the screws.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiOj-7MAO_w

If you have the 6 year warranty, you should check into Tamron to have them fix it.

Yes, there is some risk in this repair. Attempt at your own risk.
If seems that the biggest risk is in over-tightening the screws, and thus
having a wobbling front element.

This is a very cheap part of the design of this lens. The IQ is good, but the
build quality leaves something to be desired.

I'd recommend sending it to Tamron unless you are comfortable with using
a jeweler's screwdriver on small screws and not over-doing it.

I wouldn't worry about repairing it if image quality etc isn't affected.. I'd just use it until it falls totally apart.. But I'd be very careful fitting the lens hood..

Hi peeps,

I'm a total noob which just bought a canon 450D + a tamron 17-55 :) just had to get one, seeing the pictures u guys posted in this thread, especially the ones of the cars are amazing!

They also made me have doubts about my tamron 17-50mm copy though. Maybe my expectations were set too high due to these pics. My lack of knowledge doesn't help much either but my pictures are nothing near the sharpness of the ones u guys took.
So my question is; have you guys edited these pics alot in lightroom/PS including unsharpen masks etc, or is my lens just terrible?

Example pic (best in sharpness I got sofar):

100% crop (iso 100, 50mm, f/4,5, 1/640)

for that type of a shot there are a lot of ways that you could get movement, a slight breeze could move the flowers, and did you use a tripod for the shot?

munkusin
8th of June 2009 (Mon), 09:23
Oh, I kinda thought the high shutterspeed would've excluded that factor (most of it at least ). And it was shot handheld btw, sure would want to get a tripodthough! I quickly made a few pictures of different objects just to illustrate the( lack of) quality/sharpness of my lens, this flower was the best result I got.

David83
8th of June 2009 (Mon), 18:45
the small pic looks awesome.. its hard to tell from its size but is there anything in the pic that looks sharper thean that 1 flower . i dont know what focus point you were using but it could be slighty front or back focusing .

and unless you view at 100% all the time i wouldnt worry about it to much

i have a few lenses that take pics that look horrible at 100% , but at web size or even the full size of my moniter look outsatnding:cool:

*sigh*
I sold mine two weeks ago because I moved to the 1D MarkII and I got a call yesterday that my sister wants a DSLR for her year of studying abroad to Italy in August.

I always missed that lens and now I have to go find a good deal again. 'Oi vey~'

zelseman

So I have sold my Sigma 24-60 f2.8 to fund a new, wider lens.
I was nearly sold on this lens, but I made the mistake of reading the reviews on FredMiranda.com. Alot of people say that this lens is soft wide open. is it going to be any more soft that my sigma 24-60 was?

bbeck4x4
13th of June 2009 (Sat), 19:09
I have not noticed any softness at any f-stop on this lens, the slightly noisy focus motor would be it's only drawback imho.

zelseman
14th of June 2009 (Sun), 15:21
I can deal with focus noise, that isnt an issue for me. But a soft lens wide open would be a problem for me.

... in addition to the other shots i've posted in this thread.

obviously your skill at determining WHAT is precisely in focus is much harder at close range, wide apertures, and towards the 50mm end. i have a haoda screen in my 20d and it provides a lot more visual feedback in terms of what's in and what isn't.

af sensors aren't perfect--it's up to you as the photog to do the quality control.

i've had the tamron 17-50 since thursday and so far it's been great. build quality is excellent. focusing isn't exactly loud, although it does tend to hunt a lot in low light, and it produces very very sharp photos. i've used the canon 17-55 2.8 is before and i honestly can't tell the difference in image quality between the two.

It is pretty sharp already at f/2.8. Try shooting in better light, f/2.8 ISO100, perhaps with a flash and you should see it a bit sharper in its plane of focus. Remember that f/2.8 is a narrow DOF and only parts that you focused on will be sharp.

Expect sharpness to go down somewhat as the ISO is raised.

great all around lens for a 1.6x crop camera. Only gripe is the loud focus. So if you're doing weddings where noise is a factor I would recommend the canon 17-55 is.

I've used both, and while the 17-55 is useful for its IS and USM, I don't feel that it makes it worth the extra $400-500. Honestly, I can't tell any difference in IQ between the two lenses. I love my Tamron 17-50, the only reason I can foresee getting rid of it would be to go to a FF body.

20d. The editing is a bit "out there" for me versus my typical stuff. But I obviously oversaturated, up-ed the contrast, and used a little yellow bias with a decent vignette for the final result.

Here are a couple more of my car, with a more "general" editing style (all with the 17-50 to stay legal):

That's pretty much what I figured. It sounds like the 17-50 is a good lens and a good value, but if the $$ wasn't an issue, most/many people would buy the 17-55. I figured the users who "upgraded" to the 17-55 did so because they originally could only afford the Tamron but when they later had the money, the IS, USM and ?? convinced them to upgrade. That's exactly what I was considering doing as I am about to buy a 50D and need to get another lens so my wife can use my XTi while I am using my 24-105L on the 50D. By getting a lens in the 17-xx range, she can not only use it as a walk-around lens, but it'll give me something wider and faster than my 24-105 f/4L when I need it. With a body, the 17-55 would cost too much and I've been reading too many negatives about my first consideration, the 17-85 (plus it is too slow).

ah, just a question guys. is the zoom ring of the tamron 17-50 hard to turn?

a friend of mine recently got this lens (but for the Nikon mount), and I tried
the lens and turn the zoom ring but i had to exert a great deal of effort
compared to turning the zoom ring of my Canon EF-S 55-250mm.

was that normal? or was it a bad copy that my friend had?

i'm also planning to get this wonderful lens along with the 60mm
and i'm concerned with the 'zoom ring issue'. thanks :)

My Tamron 17-50mm was a tad tight when I first got it.. After 18 months use the zoom ring is silky smooth..

It will loosen up after use..

Nice pics, barq. Did you use an ND filter on the last one? Great flare control, something the Canon 17-55 is often bashed for.
